Is your mother giving you a hard time about eating your greens?
Well she might just be on the right track.
Have a look at these good points about green veggies and maybe it won't be so hard to follow her advice...
Can you eat too many green veges?
Nobody knows for sure, but go ahead and try! It is recommended that we eat at least a couple of servings of green veges per day. This could be in the form of bean sprouts, green pepper, or lettuce on your lunchtime sandwich or in your salad, and broccoli or peas for dinner. Don't let your green veges go dry, limp, or soggy in the fridge. Precious nutrients are lost the longer you keep your greens. Eat them on the same day you buy them or keep them in the crisper in the fridge. Frozen green veges are a good alternative, but don't use them all the time.
What's so special about green vegetables?
Several vital nutrients and nutritional factors can be found in large quantities in green vegetables. These can help to keep your health in tip top condition in more ways than one.
# Fibre: Green vegetables are a great source of fibre which helps to get you going regularly and helps to detox and cleanse your system.
# Vitamin C: Green vegetables contain heaps of vitamin C, essential for a healthy immune system and clear skin.
# Vitamin A: Green vegetables are high in beta-carotene, an important antioxidant which protects the immune system. Beta-carotene is converted to vitamin A which boosts your vision, protects your lungs, and helps to prevent dry flaky skin.
# Calcium and magnesium: No more painful visits to the dentist if you eat your greens. Green veggies are great as a small but regular source of calcium and magnesium for strong teeth and bones. They are also effective in calming your nervous system.
# Potassium: Leafy green vegetables are also a good source of potassium to keep your heart beating and your muscles toned.
# Vision: Leafy greens, such as spinach and silverbeet, contain a natural plant chemical called Lutein, which keeps your eyes healthy and prevents vision deterioration.
# Digestion: Some of the natural plant chemicals in green vegetables (such as broccoli) can also help with digestion and help to keep levels of bad bacteria down. These bacteria may cause gas, constipation, and indigestion.
# Cancer fighting: Cruciferous vegetables (members of the cabbage family e.g. broccoli, cauliflower and brussel sprouts) have several amazing cancer-fighting phytochemicals which may actually keep cancer-causing substances out of your body.
# Folic acid: No it doesn't have to come out of a jar! Green veggies supply most of the natural folic acid we eat. Folic acid not only helps to prevent abnormalities in babies, but also helps to protect against abnormalities in the cervix and intestines
Thats why I like eating green vegetables?
