We have a new puppy today, our 13 year old existing dog hates him. Any advice?

Today we got an 8 week old Border Collie puppy. He's lovely. We also have a Jack Russell, who's used to Border Collies as we had one previously - he passed away in April. We tried introducing them but the Jack Russell went for the Collie and bit him on the paw. Geez, was there a lot of yelping or what! Luckily it was only a puncture wound and nothing was broken. Collie is OK, but Jack Russell is in his cage! Please, has anyone any advice on how to get the Jack to get on with the Collie?

My Jack Russell was bred from Ratters, both his mother and father were working ratters. He has a very strong grip when he locks his jaws on anything, and you just can't prise it apart. He gets on OK with the cats though - we had the cats first!

Fingers crossed that they have some good advice for you. I know that Jack's are supposed to have a strong hunting instinct, not certain how that can be worked out with a young pup. Although I do know one that lives with another Jack and a cat and they get along. Best wishes!

I have intrpduced puppies to older dogs many times. It just takes some patience. Start out with only letting them spend small amounts of time together...maybe 5 min or so. Make sure you keep reassuring the Jack Russel, as it was his house 1st. Mostly it's just a jealous thing. He wants to know that you don't like him less now that you have a new puppy. Make sure the puppy doesn't get more attention than the older dog. That will only make things worse. After they can spend 5min together without conflict, make the time longer. Just keep doing things that way & they'll get along fine. Some dogs adapt to having new dogs in their territory pretty fast & some take a while. It all depends on the dog. So I can't tell you how long it will take for your Jack Russel to adapt. But the 2 of your dogs will be fine. :)

You're welcome...for the advice. From the date on the original post, you just got the puppy less than a week ago. You can't expect the Jack Russel to accept the new pup right away. It will probably take about a month for him to get it in his head that the pup's not going anywhere & start calming down. Try making him lay down while he & the pup are in the same room. He can't really be mean while he's laying down. Just a thought. :)

I don't think that'd work - he's already killed my kitten and seriously injured one of my chooks who happened to be in the house as it was ill. I just cannot trust him one bit. Sad, because he's a lovely little doggy.

I tried this, reassuring the Jack Russell, but he's a vicious little critter and just wants to eat everything. I cannot trust him, not even for 2 seconds! Thanks for your advice - it is good! :)

Nope - no progress whatsoever. We have them in separate rooms now so at least the barking has minimalised by old jack. I still haven't plucked up the courage to put the two together, I just know puppy will end up having to go down the vet for serious injuries. Hubby's not around very much to do the choke chain on one dog & me on the other dog to introduce them that way. I'm busy all next weekend - out early in the morning and back late at night both days, so no time then. Have to brave it out soon, it's just a case of finding the right time! LOL

This is not an easy situation for you feralwoman because the older dog will not be too happy to have another dog there, although hopefully given time he will get used to it. I am not too sure that putting the Jack Russell in a cage is the solution though. Generally when we get a new animal we introduce it to the older one, but stay with them for a while then remove the new one - for safety sake. We keep this up for a few days gradually leaving the new pup with the older dog for longer periods of tiem. Only after a week or so of this would we leave them alone together. Plus we also make a big fuss of the older dog.
We were told by a vet about 30 years ago that animals are to be treated like children and you introduce a new pup to an older one in the same fashion as you introduce a new baby to its older sibling. LOL
I hope this helps you a little anyway feralwoman and good luck. :)

Hi there Ossie, it's been 2 days now and he's not getting much better! I've taken him out of the cage and moved puppy to the laundry with the cats! Boy did they get a shock! Trouble is i'm on my own at the moment and can't take any chances as old jack is very quick to act. I've been making a real fuss of him today, but at the moment he's leader of the pack, so we also have to change the pecking order and move me to the top. Today i taught Toby to "sit" & "lie down". I wonder if he'll remember tomorrow... Thanks for responding & thanks for the good luck :)

Well even i have got two dogs at my place
one is a german shephard and one cutie pie Puppy german split
Well i also got this spid few months back and my 5 years old dog was not able to accept this
he always had a fight with him and eats his food
if he sleeping not letting him sleep
it happens a lot
actually the thing happened was we expressed our love to a new puppy and were not giving the same to old one
so he was not able to meet his expectations as earlier so he was hating
but in a few months
but are now good friends as both get the same love
same meals and even both go for a walk in evening together and play together
its fun now to see those frens

Thanks for your comments. The dog trainer told me today that old jack knows he's getting old and that is what is making him so vicious. In the wild old dogs are kicked out of the pack and they die. He is thinking this at the moment, bless him, but the dog trainer said that if I put them together there will be serious blood & guts.

The jack russell is an old dog & probably set in it's ways, puppies are full of energy and the older dog is most probably not, over time the Jack russell WILL get used to his/her younger counterpart, separating the two dogs is not doing anyone any good, as the older dog will feel resentment to the pup eventually. They will fight but the pup will learn it's lessons quickly and they will get along over time (after all dogs are territorial and the older dog things that the pup is moving in on his territory). The only advice that i can give i when you are playing with the pup, pet the older dog too share the love, and they will get along, but it takes time.

Yes, I've been to the vet today and that is basically what they said. I have been advised to separate them though, but they can still see each other. Fortunately little collie sleeps a lot, which stops old jack from barking. Thankyou very much for your advice :)

I don't know what to suggest as he is an old Dog
I know you say he is used to them but the way he sees it is that there is another Dog on his Patch and Jack Russels are funny Dogs anyway
All I could suggest is try and introduce them gently and hope that he backs of
I hope you manage it

I have two dogs myself, and when we introduced the second one, who was 3 months old to the older one who was 10 months old, she wanted to rip him apart!! But the breeder told us it was only normal and that they should settle down in about 10 days or so. We didn't do anything special, just let them get used to each other, and when the older dog was too much, we'd just make her stop. If he took her toys and she got mad, we wouldn't say anything, because the breeder told us not to; the younger dog must know that she's a leader. So, 3 months and a half later, they are best friends, the older dog even protects the little one!

How lovely that your 2 dogs are best friends now! I hope one day I can at least get to the stage where my old one doesn't want to eat the other one! Thank you very much for your lovely response :)

with some very difficult a job to get your existing pet to be friends with the new pup, you have to make them know each other but always in your presence. there is loads of information available on this on pedgree site www.pedigree.com/. I really found the information on this website quite helpful in training my German shepherd
