Breeder or pet store?

What kind of pet would you get from a breeder and what kind of pet would you get from a pet shop? (considering you aren't able to get one out of a shelter or decide you don't want this anyway).
I wouldn't get dogs or cats at a pet store, I might buy a rat there as I did that before, but it must be a good store where they are picked pu frequently and have lots of space to run around.
When going to a breeder I allways like to check for myself if the place is clean and if they know their bussiness. You can't be 100% sure, but I like to visit at least once before actually buying. I suggest going there when they have no litter, because some people get hung up on these little ones and buy one anyway; especially under bad circumstances because they want to save a little one. I understand this, I would feel the same thing. On the other hand, as long as people keep buying they can keep doing their dirty bussiness...

I have to agree with you in saying that pets shouldn't be bought from pet stores. Those stores get their pets from breeders that will sell the whole litter the day they are old enough to leave their mother, then they sit in a cage on a pet-shop floor until someone comes along and buys them.
Buying a dog from a breeder is a much better route to take. However, you cannot always go to the breeder's home and see how things look! I am a breeder of american cocker spaniels and I NEVER allow anyone to go into my kennel areas. This is not because they are dirty, unkept or because I have anything to hide, this is because lots of diseases and illnesses are easily carried into the kennels from one's feet and there is nothing you can do once the bacteria is brought in. Those poor, un-immune puppies suffer because of it. Some breeders will take a chance, some won't, but you should always have respect for the breeder that doesn't allow people in. The best way to check out a breeder to see if they are good or not is to ask for their vet's name and contact information. Any good breeder will get a good report from their veterinarian!

If I hadto choose, a dog from a breeder. At a pet shop I would get small creatures, like fish, snakes, etc.
