How to be a giver.

When a person is confronted with the issue of giving, what do they think giving entails? Giving money to a homeless man on the streets despite knowing that he is more than likely going to buy alcohol with it, spending a monthly amount of your hard income on the homeless in Africa, etc. What if we all could simply devote ourselves to at least saying ONE kind word a day to someone we dont know. I would like to hear others views of what is a RELEVANT means of giving that is beneficial to those that we inhabit this world with. What is a truly selfless act and what acts perhaps are simply contributing to a perpetually dissolving society. How can we make our world better, and what can we stand for, for the sake of those we love. I want to be a better person, but i want my actions to be relevant and have meaning. I dont want to throw away my selfless actions in an unnecessary way. What are some truly great places and sites to go to where you can see a valid return for your giving?
