why Americans are called Yankee?

Well people who live in the south call people that live in the North "Yankees" and they call themselves "Rebels" and its because of the Civil War that occurred between the states.

Well it might not be where the term Yankee originated from. I got this off of a Website about Civil war.
Rebel:
Also known as "Rebs," Rebels were southerners of the seceding states. Rebel soldiers were feared among northerners for their fighting spirit, evoked by the Rebel yell.
Yankee:
A northerner. Sometimes known to southerners as "Damn Yankees," they were viewed as interfering in the sovereign rights of southern states.

That's interesting. I too was always curious about that. Must look into it a bit more now that you have brought it up.
