40 GB without any partitions and other OS
is adequate and 80 GB is recommended ...

it depends on the programs you install. I think for Operating System, Microsoft Office, Internet Messengers, small programs, 40 GB hard disk is enough.

Well, it depends on your requirement. if you are not planning on installing any other softwares except windows Xp and also not planning on downloading, etc, about 2-3GB wouldbe enough...
This is the minimum to run Windows XP... However, the performance of Windows XP depends almost entirly on your processor power... I believe MS recommends atleast 2GHz... About RAM I would say based on my experience to get atleast 256MB... the configuration that I run here at my PC is:
P4 2.4GHz
512 + 256 MB DDR RAM kits
80 + 20 GB UltraDMA2 IDE Harddisks

Yes... 15 to 20 GB free disk space on XP drive must gives you relaxation and also gives you time for not to format again and again....

unless your HD is really stacked up with stuff you should have no problems. I've had my HD down to less that 1GB and everything still runs OK, Albeit a little slow, so I usually try and clean stuff off and put it onto an external HD
