If you want to play games windows is the best OS at the moment but Linux is the better OS for just about anything else especially the internet.
If your interested in linux, I would suggest you download a copy of suse 10.1 from: http://www.novell.com/products/suselinux...
and take your time to learn how to use it, it's got good documentation and easy to use, if you install it to dual boot with windows you will eventually have the best of both worlds. I only use linux now and have learned more about using a computer with it than I ever did with windows.

Yep!!!
Linux is inherently safe. Virtually no viruses/malicious software are made for Linux as compared to the myriad of viruses, trojans, worms, etc made specifically for Windows.
Linux is open source. You can download the source code and make changes you like (ok, this one is more for techies). Also, most Linux distributions are FREEly downloadable.
Most software of Linux are also open source. You can also change/mess with them as you might like, and most of them are FREE.
Linux makes good use of memory. Memory in Linux is never idle. This makes Linux much more efficient on your memory and you processor. It's more reliant on your memory than your processor.
Lastly, choosing and supporting Linux makes a stand for PROPERLY MADE software. I usually tell this as a joke, but it actually is somewhat true. Windows never seems to be secure enough, fast enough, or efficient enough.

Oh, you can also try using live distribuions of Linux to try them without installing them. Though these are usually slower and have less capabilities.
