Have your kids ever written to Santa Claus?
I always figured that the letters to Santa went into a dead mail bin somewhere and just sat, to eventually be thrown in a dumpster. Until today, that is, when I saw this link on my google search page that simply said H0H 0H0. I couldn't figure out what kind of an article that would be, so of course I clicked and it took me to the snopes.com website where I found an interesting page written up about the way Canada has solved the letters to Santa problem.
Canada has actually assigned Santa his own personal zip code which is H0H 0H0. Their zip code system is made up of alternate letters and numbers. All letters written to Santa, whether they're addressed to the North Pole, Santa's Workshop or Santa at the North Pole, will be read by Santa and his band of merry little elves as long as the H0H 0H0 zip code is on the envelope! What is really amazing about this is that all letters are answered in the language that the children write in!
I don't know who came up with this idea, or who even had the forethought to reserve the H0H 0H0 zip code in the first place, but it was a brilliant idea for children everywhere who still believe in Santa and write letters to him! I originally thought this was another urban legend, but I delved further into Santa's zip code and according to the Canadian Postal authorities, "Last year, more than 1 million letters were received at Santa's H0H 0H0 postal code from children around the world in more than 26 languages including Braile." The millions of letters are answered by Santa's little elves (current and retired Canadian postal employees) who help Santa with the overload of mail!
So, to all of you who have kids that want to write to Santa, write this in your address book:
SANTA'S WORKSHOP
NORTH POLE
H0H 0H0
CANADA
