Sports in College a waste of time?

I recently read in an article in the school paper here at the University of Arizona that school spirit and sports are a waste of time. They stated that there are better things you could be doing with your time. I personally believe that sports are part of the "College Experience". What do all of you think about Sports and school spirit in college?

Sports, especially ones like Basketball and Football, bring money into the school which is used for scholarships, hiring professors, etc. So there is a benefit to it.
