Undoubtly!
The sound is something in itself and does exist wether you hear it or not...This sound does not exist for you, but he is real, as well as useless in this case because nobody hears it, lol.
God...Guy, you have deep questions ;o)

ah yes.. an age old question.. In my opinion, YES the tree makes a sound.. the energy of it hitting the earth and the vibrations in the air that it creates, will cause a sound. Just because no human ear is there to receive it doesn't mean that it wasn't sent. maybe only the squirrels hear it. At least that is my 2cents worth.

it is impossible for there to be sound if no one is there to hear it. Sound is simply vibrations in the air, hears have to translate these vibrations in to sound and our brains have to compute this translation for sound to exist at all

We are talking about sound. It is something we perceive through our senses. If no person is there, i.e. human beings do not exist, the sound as perceived by human perception does not exist. But the physical consequences of the object tree striking the ground will exist, in this case as a sound-"wave" that is best described by a physicist than by me who is a non-physicist.
In fact this question brings up the interesting point about "reality". If human beings do not exist, what happens to the reality that we perceive with all our five senses? That "reality" as it is does not exist without human perception. But Reality in all its various atoms and molecules, etc. still exists even when the human being is no longer there to "perceive" it. And also, the "reality" perceived by the human being is only a small part of the Reality we are in. Example, if our range of vision were to be increased or decreased the picture of what we see will be very much different from the normal range. Take a person who is colour-blind. The "reality" of a grey orange for him is different from the "reality" of the orange that a normal person sees. But they are both realities. The same with the sound of a falling tree for a person who is deaf.
This falling-tree-question is interesting because it brings out the fact that Reality as we cannot perceive it does indeed exist and that each species in nature "perceives" this reality within its own species-oriented biological paradigm alloted to him by nature. The human being with all his senses and brain has a very complex perception of this Reality (which the ancient Greeks called Noumenon). And through science we are gradually pushing our frontiers of perception and knowledge out further into this unimaginably huge Noumenon.

no there is no sound.........Sound is the perception of oscillations in a medium. Without a perceiver there is no sound, just vibrating air.

If a person posts a Mylot discussion and nobody reads it, does it really exist?
There are a lot of discussions on Mylot that are stuck in this kind of limbo. I think I may need another drink before pondering this question.

This is an age old question. I think that you can hear the tree fall. The reason i say this is because. Everything makes sounds. It doesn't matter if there is no one around to hear it. If it can make a sound when your around then it will make a sound when you are not around.
