Has anyone ever met a Wimpy pit-bull?

The photo associated with my profile is of my dog, Chunkers. He is a 6 year old, full-blooded pit bull. There is not one vicious bone in this dogs' body! He is polite and humble to a fault. He even let a smaller neighbor dog whoop up on him in our back yard the other day. I was so ashamed! lol At night, he is afraid to sleep anywhere other than our bedroom and, if he hears a noise downstairs, he waits for me to go check it out before he'll follow me. When you give him food, he will gently take it from your hands; he will not challenge you if you try to take a bone or biscuit from him. I'm telling you, this is NOT A MEAN DOG! Has anyone ever met a pit bull like this? They get a bad rap in the press because some owners see the need in abusing their pits and/or in training them to fight and be aggressive. I say that a dog, like a human, is what you train it/them to be. I've seen vicious chihuahaus, poodles, pom-poms, etc. So, does anyone else have a "soft" pit-bull?

My neighbor had a pit bull dog that use to come up to our house quite a bit. She was extremely affectionate. When we opened the door she would run in and plop down on the floor. We would have to drag her out. The only time I ever saw her get angry was when I was patting another neighbor's dog. By the way, Chunkers is a beautiful dog.

THANK YOU!! I think he is beautiful, too! My fiance says he is ugly and I know he understands her and it hurts his feelings. He's very emotional!! But I have never seen a more affectionate dog. I'm not just saying that because he is mine. I just got him about a month ago from a guy who was leaving state and was going to drop him "at the pound" if someone didn't take him!!!!! That would have been a shame!! Because he's a pit bull they would have put him to sleep!

Oh that's right. I watch a lot of the Animal Cop shows and they do put the pit bulls to sleep. I am so glad you took him. That would have been terrible.

Yes, that would have been. He makes a great friend and companion. I can't go anywhere in the house without him right there at my side.

It's not just a look; he IS (somewhat) innocent and definitely charming! He tries very hard to please us and is very sad when he knows he has disappointed us. He was kept in an outside kennel for most of his life, so to live in the house is a luxery for him that he does not take lightly. He's a good boy!!! Thanks for replying!

Most pits I've ever met were very aggressive. Not really mean just aggressive and territoral. I've heard of pits that are very sweet but have yet to meet one. I think it's the way they are treated. Every dog, even cats, will be mean if you make it mean. If I wasn't in an apartment I'd pit bull then I could train him to help me out around the house because I'm in a chair. By the way I chubkers is a cute dog.

He's so kind... he actually let's us hold him... when you touch him, he'd readily lay on his back and let you stroke his belly... how sweet! I'll post a pic soon! His name is Bully by the way! :D

Thanks for the reply, D! People need to know the truth about pits. They're JUST DOGS!! You don't want to intentionally provoke ANY dog, especially a pit bull. But, as I said earlier, I've known POODLES more vicious than Chunkers!! He will lick you and love you all day long, even strangers. He's like Richard Pryors' Doberman Pincher...you know, let the burglar in the house, show him where the "good stuff" is, let you hang out, but he won't let you leave!!! LOL

So funny, you sound just like my husband. he said this exact thing the other day because they are thinking of banning pit bulls here in kansas. I believe the same though, they are only aggressive if you train them to be. I have a little Jack Russell Terrior that is the most gentle, however very playful, dog you could ever meet. It took a lot when she was young to work out the aggressive tendencies that she had but we did it. I think with dogs like this, the owners have just been lazy and negligent and did not take the time to train their dogs properly. My dog is starting to get a little jealous of the baby. So, the other day my son is on the floor, eatting his bottle having a good old time, and my dog thought she would try to start licking and then nibbling on his hand. He started getting fussy so I looked over and saw the dog. You better believe she got her butt whooped and sent to time out, yes my dog gets time out. And if she ever does it again, she will be out of this home in no time flat! That's what gets me, this story about the pitt bull, and the baby, it is very sad. However, it is not just a pitt bull that could do something like that. Dogs in general are jealous beings when it comes to their owners. Don't they even eat their own young sometimes? I'm pretty sure I have heard that before. Anyways, back to the reason I began to post in the first place. We have a Great Dane that lives across the street, as big as one of those minature horses, and it is the biggest chicken I have ever seen. My little bitty dog will go to play with it, and it will take off so fast and run into it's house to get away. Funniest thing I've ever seen! Thanks for the topic chunkers!

I dont have one but I do agree with you that if you show love and affection to a pet they will show love and affection right back. My step-sister had a Black Lab mix and she was the gentlest most fun loving dog I have ever met. My step-father would play tug of war with her and if he said "show me the bear" she would show her teath and growel but if you said ouch she would instantly stop and lick your hand as her way of saying sorry. I took her for her walk after school one day and as were coming back there was a guy walking down our road. She saw this guy and instantly started to growel. I grabbed her coller because I didnt have her on a leash(she was good like that) and as the guy came closer she started to growel louder and show teeth. The stupid guy wanted to pet her. I told him to keep going before I loose my grip. 2 days later I saw his face in the local paper stating that he had kidnapped a teen that was my age at the time and raped her a few times. I felt bad for her but at the same time I was gratefull for Maggie the dog because she saved me.

Hmmm, sounds like Chunkers is a bit depressed or suffering from some self esteem issues? Maybe he needs some doggie Prozac, or a good pet therapist, or maybe just practicing some daily affirmations, like Stuart Smally on the old Saturday Night Live. ;-)

I've only met friendly pit bulls for the most part. When I was a pet photographer though, I once met one that had a court order to wear a muzzle. But other than that, they've all been nice to me.

I can honestly say that I have never met a mean pitbull. My friend had one who was just like a cat. Always wanting to be in your lap and licking at you. I thought it was adorable. I think that the public has created a fear of pitbulls and it is unfair to the dogs. A dog can't tell you it's having a bad day and wants to be left alone. It's not the dog itself that is mean or bad, it's all in the training and the way it's raised. I know of a poodle that has bitten people. Why don't we hear about that in the news???

I've had many Pit-Bulls and they were all the sweetest, most caring dogs I've ever had. When I was pregnant with my first child my American Pit was my belly protector. The dog never had any problems with anyone, except my brother who he did not care for. Dutch would not let him anywhere near me unless he (Dutch) was positioned right over my belly - let me tell you - having a 60+lb dog trying to sit on top of you...not fun. lol I love pit-bulls and it saddens me that they do get such a bad rap. Not all Pits are bad. My Boxers have more of a tendency to bite then any of my Pits.

I do!! My pit is a wimp. I worry about my Chihuahua biting someone instead of my pit. My pit also has 3 legs. We had to have a rear one amputated in August due to septic arthritis. She was so sick and now she is like a puppy. We won't get another pit because of the stigma that comes along with having them.

That's funny because my step was telling me how most pitbulls are vicious. I brought a friend in to see my dog (she's a boxer) and she was telling me how she had a pitbull. I saw her dog the next day, too. It was friendly towards me eventually. She said most people he just growls at, haha.

My aunt has an extremely gentle pit named Regis. He loves to lick our toes and all our sore spots too. MY cats are afraid of him of course. But he cries cause they won't play with him.

Where I live pit bulls have been banned, despite many protests, from owners, vets, animal rights groups etc. Yes, I've met well behaved bullys. In my opinion it comes down to the breeder and how well they were bred, and the training/devotion of the owner. Any dog can be vicious, however this breed has been picked on. I think the # one breed for bites is the poodle. I'm not certain, but I think I read that somewhere.

My brother has a pit bull that is afraid of the new puppy (its a lab pit mix) she gets really freaked out by it.And one time she was out in the yard and found a stash of abandoned kittens and instead of doing what everyone would expect of a pit bull she brought them one by one to our front porch so we could take care of them and she treats them like her babys, pretty sweet if you ask me

There is a wimpy Pit Bull named (Katie) that live in our Town Homes and she plays with all the children... She is so cute... She tries to visit everyone... tried to make friends with my Boxer (Theo) but my boy doesn't know his strengh and scares her.... so when Theo is outside.... She just watches from a distance... If she knows Theo is not around.. She will come see me and roll over so you can pat her belly.... Sweet, sweet Katie.
