How often Should A Black Person Perm their hair?

Well, I have heard someone say you should perm your hair every 2 months or more but my mom said if you wait too long your hair will fall out.
How often should i do it and why

A beautician told me every 4-6 weeks, but try to wait 6 weeks if you can. I really do not know why.
