Reservations…. Do they lead somewhere? 4/12/2006:: Pune
Long before there was a custom that people of lower cast were to made drink water from other wells, eat separately, live separately. Their even touch was like a taboo in society of higher classes. This had made their life miserable. They were so oppressed that even generations later the reverberations of the oppressions can be felt. Even now if a small village is visited still those untouchable practices are followed. For a secular and a democratic country like India this is a shame that such derogatory practices are still followed.
But there is a great distinction between what happened at that time and what is happening now. 50 years ago India got independence. From that very time the backward classes have been given the benefits. Many among them have utilized it in the right way. But many have not.
There have been generations and generations that have been using these facilities and to great extent. As it is India as with other things these reservation policies have also not been implemented uniformly. That to is again only because of ignorance of the depleted lot. Education is one important factor.
Dr. Ambedkar brought in the concept of reservation for the dalits. It was implemented, but implemented wrongly. It was for everyone from the backward classes. But very few utilized it. Now the situation is that everyone has been using this in urban areas. The plight is that because of reservations the well educated students from upper caste do not get a chance because of the so low available seats. That situation is really pathetic. This has a psychological effect on their minds. These are the bright minds that are going to take our country ahead in the coming century. If these minds are only blocked by these reservations policies then what is the government going to get from all this.
It was ok for years before to fight for reservations, but now it is a high time. Generations and generations have passed who have availed the situation of reservation. Now using it again is something like a misuse of all things. Now it is time to divide the country only on economic basis as economic rift is going on increasing. The rich are becoming richer by days and poor are becoming poorer. The poor should be uplifted not by just short term plans, but by long term plans like providing education so that the child can become support of the whole family.
Returning to our topic, reservations can lead to somewhere but only when they are done on right basis. Like in life there is always a need to maintain balance, same is out here. There will always be people some down the threshold line while some above it. To maintain the balance is what we have to do. Changing the priorities of reservations at different time is the need of the hour and will be a need for bright and secure future.
