I was 8 years old. My dad owned a garage and let me work on cars that people brought to him... as long as he told me exactly what to do, step by step. Then as I got older, he actually let me start keeping the money I made because he didn't have to tell me what to do anymore, so I guess you could say I spent about 4 years being his apprentice to making $45/hr when I was 12!

I started when I was 16, and my first job was at Target. it was pretty lame. I didn't like it much. I was a cashier, and it was rather boring.

When I was 12, a family friend owned a restaurant and let me wash dishes on the weekends.

I was 15. I bagged caramel corn for the holiday season at a candy store. It was a lot of fun...and it payed way better than a paper route!

I got my first job other than babysitting when I was 16. I worked for the Cedar Rapids Census Bureau. While school was still in, I took census door to door after school. I had to go back to some houses many times before I could catch someone at home. Some of the people were weird. I doubt that I would have let my daughter do this job with the way things are in the more modern world, but back then nobody worried about it. Anyway, then after school was out I worked all day "cleaning up" the census cards other census takers had turned in. Each card was an IBM punch card. Census takers were supposed to color in the little dots. Unfortunately some of them were incomplete or extremely messy. It was our job to get the missing information and to erase extra markings on the cards. The workers were all high school girls, and even though the task was dull, we managed to have a really good time.

I think I was 11 years old. On Saturdays I'd work at a full service laundromat folding clothes. The owner was a family friend. It was fun, and I made some money!
