A zebra crossing (referred to in the U.S. as a "crosswalk") is a type of pedestrian crossing used in many places around the world. The crossing is characterised by longitudinal stripes (hence the term, named after the zebra) on the road, parallel to the flow of the traffic, alternately a light colour (usually white) and a dark one (painted black, or left unpainted if road surface itself is of a dark color). The stripes are typically 40 to 60 centimetres wide. The crossings were originally marked by beacons and parallel rows of studs, but stripes were soon added for the sake of visibility. The zebra crossing was first used (after some isolated experiments) at 1000 sites in the UK in 1949 (the original form being alternating strips of blue and yellow), and a 1951 measure introduced them into law. In 1971, the Green Cross Code was introduced to teach children safer crossing habits.

Thanks for providing the wonderful information of "Zebra Crossing" with proof. Iam follow rules wherever I go maybe a road cross, railway cross etc. It is always better to follow traffic rules for our safety. If everyone of us follow the rules, then no need of traffic police at various signal points. This mindset has to come from our inner heart, I have seen this discipline in Singapore and South Korea.

You are right. It has to come from your heart. Desire to the right thing. There are urges and urgencies when a person tries to violate these rules and self justify them in that situation but it is wrong. these rules are for our safety only.

Not any more, it seems safer crossing in the middle of the road because cars actually stop for you then, which they hardly ever do on a crossing, most people who drive are stupid and want to be somewhere in 10 seconds.

i think the purpose of zebra crossings is lost in that case. people should follow traffic rules.. if there are rules for the vhicle drivers and riders then there is some responsiblity of the pedestrians too. we all should be responsible for our own actions.

Thats a nice advice you have given here. People should slow down at zebra crossing and see if someone is crossing the road.

I would like to add here that in India, people at redlights stop their vehicles right over the ZEBRA Crossing. They are such fools. Even if they right it down STOP LINE in BIG WHITE Letters. They'll simple ignore it.

I always try to cross at the zebra crossings. But I do not always cross at the zebra crossings. When there are no vehicles to be seen I cross the road which do not have zebra crossings.
