This happen to my sister-in-law. She went to the car and the 4yr old told her his mom was in the store. She went in the store to have management call for the mom and they said they couldn't call over the PA system. So she called the police who waited for the mom to come outside. My sister-in-law was told by the police that if something had happen to the child, she could get in trouble for not doing more for the safety of the child.

It depends. Is she just running into a gas station to pay for gas? I wouldn't worry about it then. I have done that. I have never left my kids for longer than a couple of seconds and it was at stores near my home where I know people that are around. I always lock the door and park where I can always see the car from inside the store. On the other hand, if the mother is in, say, Walmart just shopping, then yes I would call the police. No child should be left inside the car like that. My mom used to do that to me when I was little and it scared me. She would do it at night!

I would totally call the cops, so many kids die like that every year from heat stroke and other related causes, if a parent would do that to their kid, knowing the risk, then they aint no parent at all.

I would have a little chat to the children in the car, and ask them such questions like wheres your mummy or daddy? how long have you been waiting? among some other questions like, does this happen often? then decide what to do after that, but generaly yes I would have those children under some sort of survailence, to see if the parents pick up their act.

I fully agree with you. Because toddlers are fully of enrgy. They may accidentally intercept with car and any mishap can happen. In view of their tender age, they may get frightened if no is around them

I wonder if you all have kids?? you are so hard on these people who have made a bad judgement call. what is the age of this child that was left in the hypothtical situation? I have had "child protective services" involved in my life as a child and they are not the first people I would call. I'd probably take the child from the vehicle ( if it's obvious which store the parent went in) or flag down parking lot security and ask for help in that situation.

yes i have 3 children, most places it is against the law if the child is 12 or under to leave them alone. I would not call social services but the police i would call. someone needs to let the parents know the danger if u just confront them then they may do it again ,maybe the law will get them to understand

Well, for me it depends. If the child is like really young, like a baby, parents shouldn't leave them in a car all alone at all times. And if the child is kinda mature already and behaves well, and the parents leave him for about a minute... it's kinda fine.

Well, today it's different then it used to be. I would especially call the police if the kids were in a car with the windows rolled up and it isn't running (like that poor stupid woman here in Detroit who did that in 2002 while getting her hair and nails done and getting a massage). But even if they were left in the car with it on to keep cool (or warm) they're still in danger nowadays because of the nutcases who would kidnap them or are trying to get away from the law.
So yeah you have to.
Anybody remember the old days when nobody gave a crap if you left your kids in the car as long as they could roll the windows down or get out if it got hot?

thx 2or 3 min is still long enough for that child to die of heat or for someone to steal that child if no one was around , either way its wrong. thanks for your reply

What causes parent to do this? I think it is one of the craziest things a parent can do. There is chances of kidnapping, carjacking, fire, an accident or even heat related because the car is too hot from the sun! I think this is child abuse and I would report it immediately!

Dear Mindy,
I would call the police, sit there and wait for the person to return, and make sure the children were safe and out of harms way. When it is sunny and hot, it is a very big danger and some children die from this, as well as pets. I know how frustrating it is to be a single parent and have to deal with several children, but I believe there is always an alternative. Today there are volunteers that will come and give a parent a break to get out alone for awhile. Even if it is only to run errands or just chill. It is child abuse to leave a child unattended in a vehicle.
