I think you did the right thing. I would want to know the kids parents before letting my kids go to a sleep over. My 6 year old hasn't asked about that sort of thing yet! I've always made sure I have got to know at least a little about his friends parents before letting him even go round for tea or anything. I think 6 is ok to stay at friends if you know the parents well enough. I would certainly let my 6 year old stay at his best friends but I know him and his parents fairly well. I don't think I would let him stay anywhere else yet. Maybe when he's about 14 then that would be ok if I didn't know the parents because he'd be old enough to make his own choices.

between the ages of 7-14 children begin to want to spend the night over at a friends place... i think it is very important to know who your children are playing with...that includes knowing a little about what the friends parents...you wouldnt want to leave your child in the hands of negligent parents...at the same time your child should know to be respectful at other peoples homes before you let them stay the night...
