My daughter called me at work to say I had received a call from "Josh" at the bank regarding my account.
Returning the call to my bank, the operator asked what Josh's last name was. I explained that he hadn't left his last name.
Then she asked for his department, and I said that I didn't know that either.
"There are 1500 employees in this building, ma'am," she told me rather sharply.
So I asked her for her name.
"Danielle," she said.
"And your last name?" I asked.
"Sorry," she replied, "we're not allowed to give last names."

I think that the above could be to avoid any mischief and inconvinience occuring to people due to last names. That might not good to heard, admire or else.. their are so many examples.
Also it will create a confusion and wrong impression due to non responsiveness to official responces or paper responces. So this might work..

That is so typical of companies today. They want to know all this information but they can't (or won't) give out any to you. I hope that you are able to get it all resolved. I always say - if it's important they will call back, or give you an extension to call them at!!!

I know they all frustrate me by doing this too. Thanks for the response!
