Do you believe someone can TRULY be addicted to online games such as World of Warcraft or Dark Age of Camelot? (just to name a few)
If you knew someone that had a serious addiction to a PC game, what would you do?
I'm talking about someone who will sit on the computer from the time they get up until 3 or 4 am and ONLY get up to go to the bathroom or get something to eat. Someone who lets their kids run around behind them and doesn't pay attention unless someone screams in pain. Someone who will sleep next to their computer just to be able to open their eyes and see if anything interesting has happened since they laid down to sleep.

yes online games are addictive according to "Reader's Digest, march 2006 issue, 'ask laskas' portion page 73, it says..
"...Playing video games releases dopamine, a powerful brain chamical that makes you feel good.
How to kick the habit? Get rid of the dangerous object. lock the computer and give the key to your wife or husband."
i myself am addict to online game. it is Ragnarok Online. At first i was just curious because it is a talk of the town, then my neighbors invite me to play with them. until now after a year and months im still hooked with it. it cost me a lot, i dont share anymore time with my kids, i have a litle time to talk with my wife. what i do now is just botting in game so that i can do more while my charcters are playing by themselves. i know that it is a serious matter.

If you know it's a serious matter, why is it still an issue?

Like most addictions, gaming adiction is very real, Stella. nd the toughest part of recovering from game addiction is often getting the addict to acknowledge there's a problem--a task made all the more difficult by the seemingly innocuous nature of games.
Some gamers like a friend of mine said her live-in boyfriend spends at least 30 hours a week playing "EverQuest" as a female elf--a character choice she finds "weird and disturbing"--at the expense of housework, family obligations and sometimes work. "The saddest part of all is the fact that he doesn't admit that it's an addiction and seems oblivious to the damage his personal life is suffering due to the game," she said.
For players who do admit they have a problem, the most common response is a guilt-and-purge cycle common to many addictions. While a cousin f mine here was able to kill his character and delete the "EverQuest" software with no regrets, many game addicts aren't as successful.
To tell the truth, the people I've seen who quit the game and destroy their character...almost all come back and play addictively again
For most players, true recovery involves looking at the issues underlying the game habit, the players need to examine the emotional motives that prompt them to play a game excessively and look for alternate ways to satisfy those needs.
Therapy takes the issue that there are a lot of other things going on, and the goal is to get people to realize there is something going on and they need to be in charge of changing it. And also excessive game playing often reflects problems in the home environment.
There's definitely an alienation in some fashion that's going on within the family structure or work structure... They have this environment where they can safely try new things out. They can experiment with being more vocal, or they can try out a leadership role, which may not be an opportunity they have in real life. Especially for teenagers, it lets them try out different roles and identities at a time when they may be really struggling with those kinds of issues.
I myself faced these playing Ultima and PristonTale, but I realized that I was getting addicted and quit.
Have a nica day.

At what point (with any addiction) does the person think "hey, this is wrong, I have GOT to do something"...............?

Yes definitely! I have a mate that is SERIOUSLY addicted to WoW...this takes up pretty much all of his spare time now. He hardly ever leaves the house unless he's going to work and he gets on the computer as soon as he gets home. He will stop long enough to grab a small bite to eat (but takes the food back to the computer to eat) then he goes to bed in the wee hours of the morning (2am-3am) only to get up 2 or 3 hours later and go to work. Weekends are even worse and he hardly bothers sleeping at all...
Most of the time he can't be bothered answering his phone because it would take too much time away from WoW and if people come round he asks if they want to play too....if you invite him out somewhere he is always "busy"
I'd say that's a pretty serious addiction... =(

I completely agree - unfortunately computer gaming is along the same lines as casino gambling and can lead to physical problems. Casino's all over the world regularly have gamers collapse from exhaustion, cramping and something like constipation (can't remember what it's called)...

I believe it is possible to have a gaming addiction an not only for MMORPGs such as world of war craft, because for a very long period of time i was considered to be addicted to halo mutliplayer on my pc and on Xbox live. I'd skip skool just to play and stay up whole nights, go without food. All because i wanted to keep playing.
And if that's not an addiction i don't know what is.
Don't worry i'm partially healed now. lol!!

Yes it is possible for somebody to get addicted to online gaming. I once stuck infront of my pc for a computer game. It seems that this game will show who you really are and it ruin my life. I lost my job. Until I really broke, then I quit playing the game. As for now, I don't have any game in my hardisk. I regret for what have I done and promise to myself that I will not play any computer game again.

I do believe that. As a matter of fact, I am one! at least I used to be one. I play more than 15 hrs a day, only stop when I literally fall asleep in my chair or go out to buy foods (I ate while playing). No school, no social live. I stopped playing because the game's server crashed and my character is gone. That's when I realized all this time I just throwing my time for nothing at all. Since then I never play an online game ever again. But damage has been done, I have a very hard time catching up my study, and put a lot of effort just so I can socialize with people (I happen to forgot how...).

I think any addiction is bad whether its a game or drink, or partying or anything under the sun if done too much its bad.
This only makes a person more isolate from all peole living around him. Hope our generation doesnt get addicted to anything cause getting addicted to means getting away from our goal.

Yes, it is addicting. I was myself addicted to Counter Strike: Source. I played around 65 hours a week and it deeply cut into my school work and personal life. My girlfriend nearly dumped me and I almost flunked out of school. Anyway, I finally realized I just needed to uninstall my game and concentrate on something in real life. Has worked well for me.
