what do you think of STEPMOTHERHOOD?

Stepmoms are always perceived to be evil, mean and abusive to their stepkids. I am one of the many stepmothers around and it amazes me when people act so surprised upon knowing that I did not conceive these 3 children physically. They seem to wonder at my capability to love genuinely and wholeheartedly. I have raised these children from the time they were ages 10, 9 and 4 and they are all grown up now, ages 18, 17 and 11. I am very much hands on when it came to them and I try to involve myself in all their daily activities as much as possible, even stepping in to help them make decisions especially life-changing ones. Do you think there are a lot of stepmoms like me? Or, more aptly, do you think our perception of what stepmoms are like has finally changed with time?

I raised three stepchildren, and although I made a lot of mistakes, they knew I cared about them and was there for them when their own mother wasn't. Now they are my best friends! I think perceptions have changed because there are just so many more stepmoms than there used to be!

hi. thanks for your response. when my stepdaughter was about 5 years old, she told her playmate's mom that I am her stepmom and that mom asked her "isn't she like cinderella's wicked stepmom?", my (step)daughter came home asking me "mom, how come you are not like cinderella's stepmom?". that incident somehow made me think that there are still people out there who are trapped in the old belief... well, i guess you are right, maybe there just weren't many stepmoms back in the old days. :)
