Do you believe it's good or bad to defragment your computer?

I have always been a firm believer in using the defragment function of Windows on a regular basis. From experience, I find that my computer really does run more smoothly overall if I perform this among other regular maintenance functions like disk cleanup. I have talked with other people who spend a lot of time on computers and even some professionals. Some say they agree with me. Others say it isn't physically good for the hard drive to defragment it. I would like to hear some opinions on this with some good reasons why...either way.

It's indicated to defragment because Windows's file system as we know stacks all the files together than if you delete something there apear gaps between the files than he writhes in those gaps and so on and at a time it start to move slower because it takes longer to search for something because they are all mixed up. So defragmenting help allot because it kind of reorganizes the files so Windows can find them faster. My opinion do it, about 2-3 times a year or even more.

Yes, that is the technical explanation but you need to do it AT LEAST once a month, especially if you are downloading a lot of stuff or installing and uninstalling a lot of programs all the time.

That's true! If you are uninstalling and installing a lot of stuff.

Every time you uninstall something, the next thing you install will be all over the disk in the newly opened spaces. That's why defrag is required.

I always forget about compression but I try to empty my trash and throw away folders I don't need.

I defragment my computer about once a month. I also do that when I have deleted a lot of programs and files. It does help my computer run smooth. If it wasnt good for the computer I doubt windows would have put that function on here.

defragmenting is very useful for computer. It is just like cleaning and rearranging things in the house so that they will be available immediately when required.

The Library - Remember these shelves of books? Defragmenting is like putting the library books back in their proper places after they have been taken out for lending or placed on tables somewhere else in the library for people to do research. Everything has it's proper place!!
I never thought of that comparison but its a good one. I always thought about it like a shelf of books in a library that all need to be properly replaced after some have been lent out and some have just been moved to other parts of the library for people to do research? Remember the library? LOL.

Once a month I run disk cleanup and then defrag. I think it is good for the computer because it makes it easier for it to sort through files and does make it a little bit faster. I have never heard anyone say it is bad for the computer.

My experience has always been that it helps to keep things in line. I like to use it with CCCleaner and SpyBot.

If you learned about it, you would find that your computer would run much smoother from doing it from time to time.

It's definitely not a waste of time. If you do it about once a week it really doesn't take long. You may not notice a big difference in it each time, but it actually does help to keep things up to the optimum performance level. If you only do it say once every six months, you would notice it would take a very long time to do it and you would then notice a huge difference in your performance. Defragmenting is very necessary if you download alot of files and if you put on and take off programs very often. If you play online games, you are probably using a lot of your computer space in temporary files that need to be cleaned out and then have the disk defragmented. The previous are reasons that you would have to defragment on a more regular basis than someone who didn't do these activities.

There is no reason why it wouldn't be good for your computer. The only possible reason is, like you said, the possible wear and tear on the hardware. But honestly, this will be offset by the fact that the defragging will store the files on your disc in an optimal manner so that it will have to search less of the media to access something. So yeah, defrag away.

i do the disk clean up and defrag every time i add or remove large programs, like games and other things. you're right, it does seem to speed things up and smooth them out...now if i could just figure out how to clean up the registry without costing an arm and a leg...

Well if you do it EVERY DAY, it might end up pissing your computer off, but once a month or so I don't think is that big of a deal. Getting those bits and pieces of programs back together makes it all run faster
