How do you get a job when you have a criminal past?

I have been trying to find work for the past couple of weeks since having my fourth child. I can't seem to get past the interview process because of something that I did 6 years ago. I wrote a bad check, it's on my record as a felony. I've had some good jobs since, but through temp services. Now even temp services are turning me down. I am not trying to work at the bank or anything. I'm skilled in many fields and I can't even work in them because of the felony. And I just graduated in August. Do employers ever stop looking at your past and see your hard work.
