Well. I think he was quite pretty at one time :-) - certainly he has always had that required charismatic quality of the big screen. I don't think he is the best actor of all time. I think he too often chooses easy parts that fit his persona and as such many of the characters he plays are quite similar. I think one of his best performances was as Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver; a film that was made in the mid 1970s. It was a performance that he has rarely equalled or bettered since.
So who would be my choice? Well at the moment I just can't think of one.

I really enjoyed Taxi Driver. For me it was a rare gem from an era of film I'm not usually impressed by.
You have a valid point about his choice of characters, although he has made several interesting breaks from this typecast. I particularly enjoyed the way his typical authoritarian character was used to provoke humour in Meet the Parents / Fockers.

I don't watch TV and haven't seen movies for yonks, so I can't be called an expert by any means.
I remember Jack Palance, but I really liked Sean Connery. I think he's a good actor, but I sometimes get the impression he is just being himself. My favourite actor - and this seems ridiculous - is one whose name I can never remember. (I'll probably remember it as soon as I've posted it). He played the lead in Silence of the Lambs and also played the part of CS Lewis in the story of his life.

Thanks for sharing your opinions. I believe the man you're referring to is Sir Anthony Hopkins (he was knighted by the queen for services to film or culture or something).
He is a truly great actor and has a firm place among my favourites. I particularly enjoyed his portrayal of Van Helsing in Bram Stoker's Dracula (the one with Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves), although I believe he was heavily edited which was a shame. He and De Niro share many talens and qualities that I admire. They can make a character their own and bring them startlingly to life.

Anthony Hopkins is the one. Isn't it odd that I like him so much but can never remember his name? Thanks for the reminder.

He's ok but I certainly wouldn't name him as the best actor the film industry has been privelidged to know. For me it has to be Sean Connery. He is the greatest actor, he is so versatile, very funny, and has excellent wit. He has a sterling reputation and has a book of films under his belt. He has given so much and presents a good, clean image. He is truly a wonderful actor in every way, he also has the looks and even now he is still going strong!

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, I don't speak hindi or any other language of india, so I cannot really watch indian film. We have a large asian community where I live, so maybe they will start providing those movies with subtitles in my area and I'll check him out!
