Messier's jersey will be retired in Feb 07 when Gretzky is in town. I'm looking forward to this as I think this is where his Jersey is truly meant to be retired. Not taking anything away from what he did in NYR, but 5 Cups in Edmonton vs 1 in NY (that 94 NYR team was filled with Oilers anyway), there's no doubt where Mess's career was established.

There's no doubt about it, the fact New York retired his jersey first takes away from the ceremony that we will be holding for him.

Well, the retirement here is going to be awesome. I can understand NYR retiring his jersey but I think Edmonton should have done it first. Either way the Edmonton Retirement is going to be awesome and better than NYR's that's for damn sure! It would have been silly if LA retired Greatzky's Jersey before Edmonton.

He had great seasons both places, so there's nothing wrong with both teams retiring his jersey, it's been done before. The one Cup he won in NY was their first one in 40 years!

I don't think you can compare his time with Edmonton to any other place. There were many seasons in NY where they did not even make the playoffs. There was not one season in Edmonton (I think) where he did not make the playoffs. As for the 1 Cup in NY, the whole team was practically all ex-Oilers anyway. No wonder they won the Cup.

I have to agree. There are some teams that you simply equate with a player as "his team". Messier and Edmonton is definitely that way. Hope you get to experience the retirement first hand!

That is probably because you are not a hockey fan my dear. Have you heard of Wayne Gretzky?

Are you a hockey fan of the NHL? I don't see how you could be a hockey fan and not know Mark Messier? What teams do you know?

I also heard on the radio today that Mark Messier will also be getting a part of St.Albert trail named after him. Messier Trail just like Wayne Gretzky drive two well deserved Oilers for life!!!

You are right. I absolutely agree with you on everything you said. This is where Mark's should have been retired first. Don't matter, it will be better than NYR's ceremony.
