This is a great discussion. I have to admit that I did not know who he was. I just recently began to become interested in world history and world politics. I have spent far too many years in my own little corner of the world; it's time to start branching out! I've become much more aware of the world around me just by being involved with treating HIV/AIDS patients, since the worldwide pandemic is growing so rapidly.
I read the posts here, and will now do a little bit of research and reading to educate myself more. He sounds like the South African equivalent of Martin Luther King,Jr.

Hi Laurie, thanks for the post, yes I think you could compare him to Martin Luther King, Jr. Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 26 years for resisting the previous regime and fighting the apartheid movement. When the country beame a democratic country in 1994, he became the President of this country after he was released from jail. He also wrote a book about his struggle and life, called: The long Walk to Freedom and recently recieved the Nobel Prize for Peace. He is a remarkable man, and a icon to many South Africans!

I wrote down the name of his book. I'm going to look for it on Half.com, as I would be interested in reading it. I'll let you know when I do start it!

Nelson Mandela is a brilliant man who fought for what he believed in. It is through this man that South Africa overcame apartheid. He was in prison for 27years due to the 'white government'. When he was released from prison he became the President of South Africa. His prison no was 46664. A huge concert was held in the Cape area called the 46664 concert. Nelson Mandela was there, and just being in his presence is very overwhelming. A lot of money was raised that evening for one his charities. Aids. When we pronounce his prison number we say- 4 double 6, 64. As they don;t like the triple 6 reference. He has also written a brilliant book, 'The long road to Freedom.' I admire Nelson Mandela for sticking to his convictions and for never giving up in what he believed in.

Thanks for your great post. I am surprised that not too many people have responsed to the post. Do I conclude that the average user on MyLot does not know who Madiba is? I thought he is a hero worldwide, and thus would have had many more posts!

I have heard of Nelson Mandela before. I hade first read about him in a historical fiction called "The Covenent" by James Michener back in 1980. There was a discription of what was going on with Nelson Mandela, The apartied. and how individuals were taken to the tribal lands though they had been gone for generations. I recall hearing about his wife and her troubles. I had not heard Nelson called Madiba. What does it mean? That had to be a terrible time for your country.

Madiba, an honorary title adopted by elders of Mandela's clan. The title has come to be synonymous with Nelson Mandela. Many South Africans also refer to him reverently as 'mkhulu' (grandfather).

of course everyone should know who madiba is. a man who has contributed so much to political stability in south africa and at the same time changing the course of history in that country without a civil war taking place. he is an inspiration not only to the black people of south africa but to the whole world. that such a man can come out of prison after 27 years and then succeed in unifying all the people in south africa without so much as showing a trace of bitterness is truly inspirational. some leaders in countries have taking the path he choose as an example of how they may lead the countires out of the political quagmire that they find themselves in.

I didn't know that. But he surely played a significant role in opening up the path for having a diversity of religions in South Africa.
