Volleyball... What is your position?

I have played the game of volleyball since I was 12 and the game has changed a lot since then. I'm not the prototypical volleyball player as I am 5'4" and stocky but am quick and have a vertical jump that would make up 3 verticals of 3 of my teammates added together (you get the idea). Anyhow I was a setter (surprise surprise) in high school. Now I play competitive co-ed adult league and play Right Side in a 5-1 with a female doing 99% of the setting.

My position is over on the bench sitting down.
In high school we played volleyball for an entire semester.....it took me till the last week to successfully serve the ball OVER the net...
Needless to say nobody really wanted me on their team.

That's because you never had someone to teach you how it's done. Do I have to show you how to play volleyball too?
Of course I will. It might be hard over the computer though.
Lesson #1 - Ball must go over net, not into.
Lesson #2 - take bum off bench.
Next week we learn how to fill water bottles.

Now, I'm WAY better at filling water bottles than at serving the ball.
Boy was I unpopular in gym class.

That's cool. Thanks for sharing. Let me give you a little bit of a volleyball lesson.
The positions in volleyball are, Power (aka left side), Middle, Setter & Right Side (aka technique).
There isn't a position called "blocker" as everyone on the court would perform blocks when they are in the front row.
Keep playing and having fun. Good luck and defeat those enemy spikers! May the force be with you!

I've played volleyball since I was 9 or 10. I'm now 16. I went from playing power, to setter to right side, and now I'm playing labaro for my highschool team. I'm 5'4 aswell. I love volleyball, it's my passion and I hope to play AVP in the futureee.

That is incredible and yes you drew the picture for me in my head. I grew up playing volleyball and i am 5'8 and for a girl thats pretty tall. I was always a spiker and blocker. I used to have some deadly serves too ... It has a been a while though thats for sure and GO OILERS GO!!!

Yes, 5'8" is tall for a girl. Bring on the serves. I'd be happy to take you on :). Do you think you'd be able to handle my hits? I can hit with both hands you know. That's what makes me so.......deadly on the right side. You think you can handle it?

I began to play in 4th grade. I played all the way up through high school and in college. I am 4'11 and a setter. We always played a 5-1 I was a freshman in highschool and I was the settter on varsity! I played in the junior olympics for 4 years and I played in 3 winter leagues. Now I coach currently to teenagers, and run my own winter league. I can serve a mean ball, and block when needed. My spiking approach is perfect if I need to do a downball or spike.. so it is nice to be the unexpected setter who can actually spike a ball. I play mud volleyball also once a year for charity! and I play on a sand league doubles with my husband!
I love volleyball.

I think my name says it all. I do feel that the position of weritter is probably ranked about 3rd on the inportance list of positions. Although they provide valuable offence the setter and the middle blocker play a more crucial role on the court. Here's why I feel that way. the middle blocker is the one that owns the net on defence. Without a strong middle, you've got no good first line of defence against the opposing middle and power hitters. Your backrow will not have any teeth by the time the match is done. It takes a lot of conditioning to be a middle as you pretty much have to jump on every attack from the opposition. The setters are the driving force behind the offence, the quarterback, if you will. Without a great setter means no effective offense therfore the other team will counter with an offence and it may be target practice for the other team. Also, the setter is blocking the other teams powerhitter.
Powerhitters do however have to hit the not so greatest sets if there is a broken play. Also, they are responsible for a lot of offence.

My high school was one of the few high schools in the state to have a varsity mens volleyball team. I was a definsive specialist and played as a backup to our starting setter. I love volleyball and still play intermural volleyball with my fraternity in college.
