Computers and Internet - Has this machine taken over your life?

Before I had Internet I used to read a lot. I used to have favorite authors. I used to do needlework. I loved needlepoint and embroidery. I loved to cook and I loved to write poetry. I still write a fair amount because I am able to do that while I am sitting at the computer,...it fits in. I still cook because of course I have to eat and I have to feed my family. In fact I use the Internet to find new recipes sometimes. I love to experiment. The problem is that I really don't read books or do needlework anymore. I think probably my eyes are not as good as they used to be. It might be aging, but it is most likely staring at the computer screen too much. Do you find that the Internet has completely taken over your life?

The Internet does seem to take up a lot of my time. At first it was 'work' related, then it became a hobby and now, I think, a fixation. The answer is a 'reassessment'. Keep and schedule in those things which you feel you really miss. Don't spend too much time regretting those things that weren't that important. I love cooking and I find that researching recipes on the Internet has enhanced my repertoire and inventiveness.

I look for recipes too sometimes. It's easier than finding my pages in the cookbook. My cookbooks are covered with dust :( They must feel lonely.

We are always fighting over who should use the computer. The school gives the kids laptops for homework and research but the wireless internet doesn't work here for some reason. It's a constant battle.

yes the internet takes up way tooooooooo much of my time . i use to do things and for about 4 years while i helped my mother thru a difficult pregnancy and helped her raise my babys sister while she was ill for the past 3 years i sat online all day while babysitting and watch my sister play while i play online games and talk to friends with headphones and webcam.lately tho my mother has been doing much better and goes to swimming 3 times a week for 3 hours each time for rehabilitation and i go with her .i m playing less and although i miss my friends online and the internet i also really enjoy getting out and swimming again,so just try to do something that has to be scheduled into so that you make yourself get off line for several hours a day,it is really enjoyable.

Good idea. I am thinking about getting a gym membership so I can swim regularly actually. Does thinking count as an outside activity?

I think there are special glasses you can get if you do work on the computer to much... however I don't feel my vision has degraded at all. I love the internet but sometimes it's nice to just take a walk outside or do things with friends.. I mean who wants to be a lazy computer slob?

My vision was bad before. I have special computer lenses but they don't really keep me from straining my eyes. I used to walk alot, but I can't walk much now because of pain. I was computer addicted then but I am now too, maybe more. I do try to take care of my house and family though.

I'm only 23 and I've noticed a difference. When I was really young I'd spend all day reading books, playing outside etc. Now the world seems to revolve around technology! I want my children when I have them to have good reading and writing skills. There is nothing worse than bad spelling and grammar. I think reading lots of books helps this. I know it helped me! My mum used to read to me every night, people don't seem to do that now. I think it improves the imagination. I know the internet is a wonderful place with so much children can learn about but I think it's also important not to rely on it. I want my children to go to the library or go outside and see how things work in real life without just watching a movie about it!

See? You hardly have known a day without it, you aren't that old yet. And you still notice that it's changed your life. Technology is only what we call it so we think it's a wonderful positive thing!! MUHAHAHA!!

I don't think it's taken over my life, although it does make me use a computer more often thesedays especially because I'm doing a computer course at college. It has made my life better and made me neglect such things as reading books and whatnot. When I'm with my boyfriend however, neither of us hardly use a computer - maybe in the morning when the other's in the shower and before we go to bed but that's about it...

HMM the Internet has taken over our lifes!! OMG!! seriously.. not a day i have not log online. Exceptions are when i go for holiday trips. But seriously, i pay bills online, i watch movies, i check my email, i do my work online, i practically do almost everything ONLINE! i wonder what will happen if the internet just goes down one day? suddenly all the connections are drop and the servers stop running? i think this is some kind of collective or hive thingie i saw in star trek - where everyone is connected as one. they'll die if disconnected. i don't know what i'll do without my computer and internet @@"""

yes .. i do really beleaive that internet has taken over atleast my life. as i am very much adict to the internet ... day and night every time i am sitting on a PC surfing internet ... either i am in office or at home. 80% of my time is devoted to the internet only ... there is no reason most of the time i am just sitting in frount of the PC . googling the searches and viewing online movies and all that crap stuff .. simply saying .. just time killing.

When I was younger I used to watch waay too much TV. Now I spend waaaay too much time on the computer. One screen has been replaced by another. However, I can get quite a bit more accomplished sitting in front of the PC than in front of the TV. I can chat with friends who are out of town (a lot of my friends are away at schools in different cities, plus I have a friend who is in Israel in the army), I can get banking done, play games, do research - I can read a lot. I learn a lot from the internet - from diet strategies to news to information on any topic I could hope for. I still read occasionally (and once I start a book I don't put it down til it's done..) but yes, I do spend way to much time on the computer.

I hate to say it but yes. I find way to many hours lost sitting in front of the screen. I do read every night while I take a bath. That is when I would read reguardless of the computer or not.

I don't think it has taken over my life, I think it has made my life easier, everything is so easily accesible now, you can shop without having to leave the comfort of your home, find good deals, do excellent research, It's awesome. I don't know what I would do without it, I would have to resort to encyclopedias, I still love to read, and do so and use the internet to purchase more books, I think it's made it easier.

I have a lot of hobbies, Fixing computers & generally anything that is broken, playing with my kids, watching tv, playing ps2 games, reading, going out with my wife & my friends and cooking . So i dont think the internet has taken over my life, but i do be on it a lot (but if you think about it, I am watching less tv so it sort of evens itself out), i still have time to use my sewing machine and do other things that i like so it is a matter of not letting it take over your life.

I will spend way too much time online if I don't have my stepson bugging me to use the computer...like when he goes to school. I try to balance my time so I can spend it with my husband as often as possible.

Internet - The internet has given us all access to a whole new world.
The internet has given us all an opportunity to explore the world in a whole new way, you use it for cooking, someone else may find other uses, it has bridged the world like never before, you can get the answers to pretty much any question that you have, learn, develope new ideas and so forth. No, I don't think the internet has taken over your life, your thirst for knowledge and the fact that it is so easy to obtain has made you more curious about other things.
