Anyone from Detroit here? I'm currently looking for places to relocate and I was wondering what living there was like. I've been looking at houses online there and everything looks rather dingy. Is that realistic or is it just a bad impression? I'd appreciate your thoughts.

What little I know of Detroit was the impressions I got when I visited there with my family a few years ago. It was honestly the nastiest city I'd ever been in. My mother had reserved us a room at a motel from the Best Western guidebook. Unfortunately it wasn't Best Western any more, and it was right down in the heart of Detroit. Even though it turned out to be a sleazy dive, my mother insisted we stay there one night. It was a terrible experience. The room door was flimsy, and the lock wasn't adequate. I laid awake all night listening to the partying in the halls and the girls on the upper floors trying to entice men in the parking lot to come up to their rooms. I was worried lest someone break in and hurt my kids. The next day we moved to another motel out in Dearborne which is really where we wanted to be, and none of us had any desire to go back into Detroit. Are you originally from the north? I know it can get really snowy and cold there.

Hi bhbirdie, How about taking a look at the middle TN area? We have great housing here, plus the weather is really nice most of the time. Very little cold weather. (well, you may like cold, I personally don't) By the way, if you decide to check out this area, just let me know. I am a realtor and I can get you signed up on a website where you can search this area lots easier than on Realtor.com, if that is where you look. You can email me at gregoryo@realtracs.com Be sure to put MyLot in the subject so I will know where it is from.

I heard it is nearly impossible to find work there and if you do it doesn't pay enough to survive. I also heard it's a rough city. A lot of danger.

I live 15 miles south of Detroit. I would suggest not buying in the city of Detroit but in a suburb around it. There's some beautiful homes west of Detroit in Ann Arbor, Chelsea, Dexter and Saline. Are you sure you want to move to Michigan? It typically gets FREEEEEZING here, but this winter has been super mild! :-)

detroit is a great city, but its only in certain parts. there is some decent places to live within the city of detroit, like the new lofts going up downtown, or some old neighborhoods. otherwise, detroit has large amount of not so nice neighborhoods, which in truth, need to revitalized and cleaned up. The suburbs of detroit are actually quite nice, especially Oakland county and other parts of Wayne County. My favorites include Royal oak, Ferndale, Huntington Woods, Farmington Hills, and dearborn. Were you job hunting in detroit...that could definitly help decide what part of the metro detroit area you would like to move to. hope that helps!
