Dubai has revealed plans to build the world's largest airport in a bid to draw in more tourists from around the world. The announcement will have been noted by budget airlines, such as easyJet, which have yet to offer flights from London airports to the United Arab Emirates' capital. Costing around €7 billion and covering 140 square kilometres, the airport will be a third bigger than Heathrow. And the new hub will be ten times the size of the current Dubai International Airport, with construction scheduled to begin in February 2006. If offering six parallel runways measuring over four kilometres each wasn't enough, Dubai plans to build an entire airport city around the new location, close to the Jebel Ali Port. Districts of the new city will service the aviation needs of the financial, industrial, services and tourism industries. 850 towers standing 50 to 300 metres tall will be erected. The airport will satisfy Dubai's burgeoning needs until 2050, although the news may also benefit UK customers hunting cheaper flights to the desert city. BA currently flies to Dubai from Heathrow but earlier this year no-frills airline easyJet ruled out suggestions it would, at least in the short-term, add the city to its portfolio.
