So I have recently.. well, four months ago, so maybe not SO recent... moved to California. AAAH, land of the sunshine, babes, and beaches. Right? HA!
I'm from Anchorage, Alaska and I'm used to down to earth, fun loving, hippies! What in the world was I thinking moving to Los Angeles!! Well.. I was in search of a new adventure, "fresh" air, new faces.. and in growing up. I have certainly experienced all of that.. but I need friends! I have been here for four months and have met a couple of people, but not people that I would feel comfortable as calling my "friends". Ya know what I mean? Everyone here is so fake, so unreal, so plastic. Everything I wear, do, see, eat, say... it's all judged. I cannot handle it.. I'm an attractive girl.. but in CA, I slip FAAAAR between the cracks because I'm not blonde, I don't have fake boobs, and I dont drive a mercedes.. goodness me, what is this world coming to!! RUSH ME BACK TO THE SNOW AND COLD!!!!

Yeah... I'm not sure how "amazing" it is as sad. People here are living in a fake world filled with nothing but egotistical values and NO morals. Coming from a strong background that has made me an ethical, honest, and genuine person... this has made me really turn my nose up at LA, which may be hypocritical of my background, BUT.. this place as you said, is "amazing in the way that it changes people

Wow, how disappointing.
My sister's best friend moved to L.A. a few years ago, and it sounds horrendous. She now has some new, fake boobs, and she doesn't work, but has a full time nanny, even though her kids are in school most of the day. My sister said when she vistited that it might be fun to give the nanny a Saturday off and take the kids out and her friend fell apart, because she has no idea how to look after her own kids.
I don't know how fixed your living plans are, but what about heading north to San Francisco or Santa Cruz (which is warmer than San Fran)? I think you might find some more laid back people to hang around with.

Yeah... well I had an idea of what it was going to be like coming here, and it's really helped open me up and showed me more than I was experiencing back home. However.. I am a fully time nanny for a single mother here in West LA, and let me tell you... these people are nuts! I get paid really, really well.. and do everything a parent SHOULD do. It's sad, but really common here. I love San Francisco and San Diego.. but I'm planning on sticking it out for a while and then heading back home. :) Hopefully it will help me realize that my situation back home wasn't as bad as I originally had thought it was!

I love your description -- it's funny and actually reads like a proposal for a TV show! Girl from Alaska becomes nanny in LA...
Must be a real culture shock. I've only been to LA once and liked it, but I went with a friend and we were hanging out with his sister and her friends, so we basically met normal people.
Hope you'll tell us some more stories... and maybe you'll be able to pitch them to a network exec!

Funny thing about that is that I actually was approached about doing a show based on West La Nannies! :) They wanted me because of my uniqueness and all... but I'm not into the whole reality show thing, and declined. I'm sure it would have been an interesting experience and made for great stories.. but.... no thanks!

West LA? Is that where you live? I understand then, I dislike that area. If you want to meet people, you have to go near the beach like Venice (hippies everywhere)... I hate going out in the hollywood area. You pretty much have to be with friends, because nobody's that friendly... Before you give up on SoCal, you definately need to try out San Diego or Santa Barbra! Santa Barbra gives a smaller town feel atleast, and there are hippies there (sorry for the second refrence)... Actually, Orange County has a more mellow mood than LA.
