Italy and Pasta

My mate just gone back to Italy where he was born and visited his family over there.He said pasta nearly every night was on the menu (which sounds great I love pasta) while visiting his folks.He just got back to new zealand and boy was my mate fat he must have put on 20kg in 2 weeks wicked.What is it about italy and pasta,why do they eat so much of it and is everyone in Italy fat? If they are not all fat then how do they eat so much pasta and stay slim? My mind boggles any ideas people?
