Why do people feel like they have to have alcohol at a party to have a good time

When ever i have a party i will only by a case of beer for my family. I am trying to explain the dangers of alcohol to my kids (especially since my dad was killed by a drunk driver)especially if you are driving. I believe that you can have a good time without drinking. Am i so wrong to feel this way?
