Water on Mars: The end of Religion?

The discovery of water on Mars pretty much buttons up the debate about religion for me. If (even microbial) life exists outside of this planet, especially on a planet so near to us, then out of the billions of planets in the universe, its mathematically necessary that there is intelligent life elsewhere.
It would be nice if this discovery would stop the reliogionists from continuing to poison this planet with their lies.

I don't see the connection here. What does the possible discovery of life on other planets have to do with religion? If God created the universe they why couldn't he have created life on other planets also? Discovering life on other planets doesn't prove or disprove the existance of a God or people feeling the need to worship a creator.

What religious doctrines are you referring to that state that there can't be life outside of the Earth? Many people may believe this and most religions may focus on the Earth where their flock is located but that is not the same as denying the possibility of life outside of the Earth.
Further, as I recall, the findings on Mars involved the possibility of very primative forms of life - possible chemical mixtures that may be life like but no real life as we know it. Christianity, the religion that I paractice and am most familiar with, is concerned with the spiritual part of humans - our souls and is not really concerned with things like ameobas which have no souls (even though they are far more advanced than what we think we found on Mars.)
Good try, but I doubt this discovery will weaken the faith of any believers of any religion.

I really dont hold a lot of confidence that the idiots will stop believing the lies. I do think it should be a big help for the fence-sitters who arent sure. The ones who have drank the kool-aid will believe no matter what.
By the way, if youre a Christian, how do you allow for this kind of discovery? Christianity is very specific. Those who change it around to be moderate, liberal or to absorb the science that has made a joke out of the bible for years, arent real christians. Either you follow your book or you dont and if you dont, youre not a christian. And if you do, then theres no other god but the christian god, those who dont believe in any god or a different god are your enemies, homosexuals should be killed, there is no possibility of life on other planets and women should be buried in sand up to their neck during menses.
So which are you?

Religion as weve constructed it doesnt allow for the existence of life outside of this world. All religion hides its arrogance and simple-minded egotism in transparent "humility". Its a disease. A mental illness.
The last dim hope for the weak. Our existence is threatened by its continued presence. The only hope we have is for science to discover and uncover facts that disprove this idiotic fantasy. The existence of life outside of this planet strikes a direct blow at the core of the religion monolith and I welcome it.
There is clearly a connection between life outside this planet and the fallibility of the god myth.

Absolutely! One of the worst things about smoke and mirrors logic is that it can be bent around anything. Like the born agains who think god buried dinosaur bones in the ground to test their faith. How do you speak to someone who thinks something like that?

WelL i think that if one planet was created and has life then other planets were created and have life. I don't believe that we are the only ones in the universe and I am a Christian I don't think this discovery would be the end to religion. People will always believe what they believe.

Those are some strong words you have used there. Good post. Had never seen a religion and aliens connection.

Thank you. Im actually referring even to microbial life if thats all weve found so far (though its a mathematical neccessity that if there is microbial life, there must be intelligent life somewhere). Even microbial life flies in the face of the god myth.
