What lesser-known anime would you recommend people give a try?

I've been watching a lot of anime lately, but it's mostly just the big names in anime... but I'm assuming there's a lot of lesser-known anime out there that are just as good or better out there to watch too. Do you have any suggestions for shows I should keep my eye out there for? Plus, if you can, tell me what you like about them.
You can make suggestions for manga as well, because I also started reading a lot of the lately.
I'll appreciate anything that you can come up with.

Thanks, I'll look that one up and see if I can find it!
As for things that I've seen and read... Well, I've seen D. N. Angel, and I've started to buy the manga for that, and I like that one - Daisuke's just so cute! But the story is good too.
I'm also a big fan of the Fruits Basket anime and manga. I have the whole set of dvds and eight of the manga for that so far. It's such a cute and girly anime. I even got my sister hooked on that one, which is like a miracle, cause now she'll watch anime with me :)
I've been watching Naruto and Inuyasha and I'm really starting to get into those as well, but I haven't gotten all that far into those series to really say much about them, but I heard people talking about them, so I figured I'd give them a shot, and so far I haven't been disappointed.

Ooh... I hate when they do that... I try to buy all my manga in the right order, but for the longest time, they've been missing number eight of one of the series that I'm currently reading. I really hope that I find it under the christmas tree this year, because I was sure to add it to my christmas list!

I was wanting to check out some of Clamp's other work, because I'd enjoy'd Tsubasa Resevoir Chronicle, so those will give me a head start on which ones to check out, since there seem to be a lot of them.
Thanks for the suggestions!

Thanks, I'll look them up too!
I've found a bunch of episodes for things posted on the site youtube.com which is decent enough quality to last through some episodes or until I know if I'm going to like the series... then I usually end up finding most of the anime I watch on eBay.com or sometimes on Amazon.com if I can't find what I'm looking for at a good price.

I think you should see 'FullMetal Alchemist' and/or 'Golden Boy' if you haven't yet. The 1st has a great story, great characters, lots of action, fight scenes, super powers, etc.
The second because it's one of the most hilarious animes I've seen (but I've not seem that much). Then, if you like music I recommend 'BECK'. It has a great story about a young boy that enters in a band (I'm not gonna tell you the whole story lol).
Of course this suggestions depend on what you like in an anime series.

wow! Thanks for the suggestions... I've watched about half of FullMetal Alchemist so far, and I'm liking that one very much. I'll have to go and see if I can find Golden Boy somewhere, because I do like funny animes too.
Also, I'll definately search for BECK because I love listening to music (especially in animes!)

FULL METAL PANIC - this one is so funny, trust me! you may be get bored on the first few episodes but just have a little patience and wait till it comes on the middle part, it's so hilariously funny, trust me!

Oh, excellent! And thanks for letting me know about the beginning of Full Metal Panic. I've watched a few that I've lost interest in early on, and I've always wondered if they got better. Now at least I know that the good stuff is still to come!

yeah, i agree with you...
GALAXY ANGELS is a great anime.
anyway, i will also suggest:
*ELEMENTAR GERAD- this is a cool one. it is a light love story, fantasy, adventure and comedy. this anime tells us how powerful love is. love is the greatest power of all, the greatest magic.
*TACTICS- this is an amazing anime about friendship. it is comedy, fantasy, supernatural beings, light drama and it also has moral lessons, too. mostly about the value of friendship.
try these animes that i suggested. i'm sure you'll watch without blinking because you don't want to miss a single scene. believe me, trust me...

I don't know if these are "lessor known" or not as I'm not huge into anime but I do liek to watch it.
The ones I enjoy are Ghost in a Shell and Inuyasha mostly. I've seen some Trinity Blood but not much. Also Full Metal Alchemist.
Pretty much whatever is on Adult Swim.

I wish I got a channel like Adult Swim... I read about it in different places that talk about anime. I've been getting into Inuyasha and Full Metal Alchemist myself lately as well, and I'll be sure to look up the other two you suggest. Thanks!

For anime movies, I would recommend Please Save My Earth, Valley of the Wind, and Laputa: Castle in The Sky. Although these movies are not as action-packed as most other anime, I still like them for their stories and character development. As for anime series, I would recommend Baki The Grappler. Its a good anime if you are into watching martial arts and stuff like that.

Wow... thanks for the movie suggestions! I haven't really seen anime movies, so it would be nice to watch some of those too. Plus, sometimes I find the stories and character development a lot more important than the action anyway (though I do like my action!) so they sound like good choices to me. I'll also check out the series you mentioned when I get a chance. It sounds like a good one!

Well, even if it's not lesser known to the main anime community, I've never heard of it, so it's lesser known to me ;) Thanks for letting me know about it, I'll be sure to add that to my list of ones to check out!

Unfortunately there is no such channel on my tv :( I've heard of other people that get pure anime channels, but I think I must order new programming to find that, because I can't seem to find anything like that.

I heard about one piece from a friend of mine, and how it's supposed to be very funny. I've been meaning to watch some of it. As for transformers and pokemon - yes I've heard about them, because they used to play some of those shows on my television. They must be very popular because they made it onto my regular channels!

Try watching Hell Girl. It's also know as Girl from Hell. It's awesome. In a creepy kind of way. It's about hiring the girl from hell to exact revenge on the person who torments you the most. But at the same time, you have to give her your soul when you die.

Mononoke hime is a good anime movie
the plot:
Ashitaka is infected with an incurable disease by a possessed giant boar god (Tatari Gami). He is to die unless he can find a cure to rid the curse from his body. It seems that his only hope is to travel to the far east. When he arrives to get help from the deer god (Shishi Gami), he finds himself in the middle of a battle between the animal inhabitants of the forest and an iron mining town that is exploiting and killing the forest. Leading the forest animals in the, San the Princess mononoke.
It's a great movie.
It's a movie by Hayao Miyazaki.
