Hey guys, I'm a second year colloege student and things are really starting to heat up in terms of exams and work load. I am really finding it difficault at times to say focused long enough to have an effective study session. I was just wondering if any of you have tips or your own personal secrets and advice that you would like to share with me as to how i can improve this.
It will be much appreciated.
Thank you very much.

Balance your time for play and study. Play and relaxation will calm you down and provide blood for your grey cells. Try meditaiton and yoga and try to stand on your head at least 3 minutes per day.
Apply what you study to your surrounding. For instance, Einstein's theory goes well with films like Back to the Future and Terminator. Visualise what you study. If you are studing Biology visualise how the blood flows through the different parts of the body. You be a red blood corpusle, close your eyes and take a journey.
Find shortcuts to remember difficult things. Eg. Stalactites cling "tightly" to the roof and Stalagmits is like a "Mighty" mountain on the ground. Mrs. Sippi drinking a Mini Soda is Missisipi, Minnesota.
Understand yourself. What is the pattern suitable for you. Is is long continuous sessions or short regular sessions. Select what is suitable for you. Hang inportant notes on the wall, even on the bathroom wall to have a glance while you have a bath.

You have to have a nice place to study in your room.First clear your room with clutter. keep it tidy and clean all the time. Prepare a timetable for all your lessons. trive to follow the timetable. Monitor your progress. Have scratch papers so you can write down things that you need to remember or practice if you are stuying math. Have enough sleep all the time to condition your mind. Bookmark your notes and try reading them over and over again. Have some light music while sleeping. hope that helps. Dont forget, eat some fruits.

The advice given above is the nice one and i would like to say that preferably you study in the morning hrs as it would be easy to remember what u have studied and take fruit juices
at intervals.

it needn't b mornin buddy, most of the people have specific timings durin which they can concentrate most, find that out.and lemme tell u,always sit fresh for doin it,take a shower when u feel uncomfortable or if u feel a lack of interest,or some jogging n stuffs,n then go back again to studies.when u r succesful in completing say one big topic, don't get up,a break at that point can jus hamper the whole thing,no.. when u r into it fully don't take a break, don't look into u'r watch.jus keep goin, all d best

When I was in college... I find studying fun and at the same time challenging. I don't study to get high grades rather I study because I want to learn. When there is something that I don't understand, I seek help from people who knows the subject better. I never stopped studying until all my questions are cleared. The secret that I can share to you is to look at studying in a different perspective. Try to find some ways wherein you could enjoy studying and how it can benefit you now and in the future.

That is very good advice. I wish I could follow it! Even when I find I enjoy the material I am studying, there are plenty of other things I would rather be doing. It is very difficult to convince myself that studying and schoolwork are fun. I think being graded on something takes the fun out of it!

First you read the book, try to recall as much as possible what you have red. When you will start first day, very few will come back to your mind, but after few days you will observe, you are able to rember much and much part of your readings. In this way, your study will be in remembrance permanently. Try it...I am not joking...ok. Most of us, only read the books and keep it forgettng after few days, again we repeat for various time and waste time. Try to read only few daily. Recall it wherever you are free. By this way you can push up your readings in inner mind which will be permanently stored.

Hello gordogg. I myself is in college too. I'm a third year college student. My suggestion is listen and absorb to your lessons everyday-listening to your professor will have great impact on your studying. After the day, try to read or at least scan your notes to refresh your memory of the day's lessons-this will help you lessen the time of memorizing since you already familiarized yourself already with your subjects. Reading everyday can be of great help especially when exams are near.
Also, try to avoid any music, TV, or computer as it may divert your attention and focus from studying. Though some people prefer studying while listening to music, what I do is lock myself in my room and have a quiet environment that is conducive to reviewing.

I know what you mean about not being able to remain focused for long periods of time. Some way or another, my eyes will always start to become heavy after an hour or so. So what I do when I'm losing my focus is I take a short walk around for about 5-10 minutes and take deep breaths. That energizes me for another hour or so of studying because the activity allows more oxygen to reach my brain...Hopefully it works as well for you as it does for me...

hey I was 4.0 and what worked for me was flash cards. Put important points on to flashcards study them in small groups of cards at a time. ex. first memorize 5, then ten , then fifteen etc. you get the picture. it works with all your classes.

I like to write myself questions. I'll read a page, and write a question about it. I'll usually try to write about 20 questions. The next day, I'll answer those questions after re-reading the pages. This keeps me focused on the material.

You need to focus...get sound sleep...at least six hours at night and a couple during daytime(during exams). Take some time out, darken your room, light a candle, sit in front of it and concentrate to the flame for 10 minutes...stare out for 5 and re-stare for another 10. Man it's going to help you focus.

Studying and scoring marks are different things. If u are concerned about grades, just look at the pattern of previous examinations. Study topics with a point of view to deliver at your exams. Recollecting what u've studied is also a very important thing.

First, it helps if the have a goal or a target grade. This is the secret of academic schoolars and they are motivated to study good and excell in class because they have set their goals ahead and that is to get high grades to maintain the schoolarship benefits. Second, study ahead of time and take a lot of practice. Good luck.

The best thing I do to study is go to the quietest place possible. I've tried doing my studying at home before and I just can't get it done with all the possible distractions. Living with 5 other guys it's really easy to become distracted, or to be invited to go out to the bar and have a drink. I always go to the library because it's really quiet and I actually sit down and do my work. The most I can usually stay there is about an hour at a time, because I get burnt out really quickly, but then i'll go back home, grab a bite to eat, and then head back. I find it very effective to do your studying in sessions. INstead of going for a big 3-4hr session, split it up into 4 1hr sessions.
