I never made candles before. You are one handy person, where do you find the time to be so creative.

I like to give homemade gifts or gifts of experiences. My mother has started having real trouble with arthritis in her knees and is having trouble walking (she's only 50). This year I am making her a couple of extra long microwaveable rice heating pads that she can wrap around her knees. I'm also giving her a certificate that says I will come (with her two granddaughters)to her house one Saturday a month. I will clean her house or do any odd jobs she needs help with and she'll get to enjoy a day with my girls. It's often the thoughts that go into a gift that mean more than the amount of money you spend.

My mom is 70, mom and dad live with mom sister and her husband, and I can't sew, Do you think a day spa is good?

If she used to visit spas a lot when she was younger or enjoyed them as a treat, then I would say "yes". Otherwise, I don't know how comfortable I would be at that age. My mother, for instance, is too self-conscious to enjoy this type of gift and would probably feel it was a little wasteful. However, she would enjoy it if I made an appointment to do it WITH her. Then it is a time shared together and, thus, more enjoyable. Does your mom live close enough for a shared experience-type gift? Since she is living with other relatives, you might try to think of something you could give or do for her that would ease the burden on the people she lives with. Many older people still recognize when they add difficulties to their caregivers' lives and feel guilty about it. She might appreciate you being the one who takes her shopping for a month or something like that. Of course, this is moot if you live too far away.

My mom would have rathered to have something I made by hand then something bought. But usually I got her lighted Christmas houses. She collected those. My dad still has them all displayed in the china cabinet just how she left them.

I got my mom a frying pan, because she wanted a new one, and I got her slippers. Every single year she asks for slippers, so I've arranged for everyone who is getting her a gift to get her a pair of slippers. We'll give her all the slippers to open first, so she thinks she's just getting like 20 pairs of slippers! And its great because she'll have enough slippers to last her the rest of her life, and she won't have to ask for any more for Christmas. As for something special for your mom, you could get your pictures taken at Walmart and have them turned into a Calendar so she has that for every month of the year. Or if you have a child, get their pictures done and use that for the Calendar.
