What exactly does defragmenting your computer do?

It takes all the fragmented files that are on your computer, and reorders where they are on your hard disk, so that they are no longer fragmented. That way the computer runs faster :)

When you have a bew computer all your files are in order. As timegoes on and you add to files and delelte them or even programs, the hard drive starts to become fragmented..ie the files and programs are not condensed together or not in one place but different parts of the file may be at different places. This takes more time for the operating system to pull the file or program at your request.. which means your computer slows down a little. Defragmenting he hard drives brings all the like files and programs together
