Does anyone out there take Prozac? I have a friend who was just prescribed a few days ago. How long does it take to kick in? Will it make her able to manage her anger better?

It can take anything from 3-8 weeks to kick in and the phase while you're waiting for it to take effect can be horrible (sleeplessness, inability to eat, hair loss for some people), but this all goes away and emotions seem to be much more balanced once it does kick in.

There was a report on the news today that stated that people who take some antidepressnst such as Prozac are prone to bone fracture. I thought this was worth noting. I had taken Prozac in the past, but really didn't help much. I am not sure how it will help for anger management. The only thing that helped a friend of mine was to take classes to help her with her anger issues.

Thanks Butterfly! Your comments are always so interesting and on point. I take zoloft, and a ton of meds for ms, and I had a bone density test recently and my doc said I had lost density, so that is something I will definitely ask about. Also, my friend is doing better with the combination of meds and therapy. I hope this progress continues. Thanks for posting!

There is no magic pill to help a person manage anger. She should go to anger management classes. I have a relative that did this due to losing her cool and treatening to beat up her boyfriend. It worked for her. She now is on an anti-depressant, but still needs to get therapy for her anger. You can suggest that she get the help, but you cannot force her.
