I am told that draining water turns in opposite directions on opposite sides of the equator. If this is true, what is the cause? Do cyclonic storms turn in different directions in different parts of the earth?

Are you too much interested in meteorology?
The cyclonic storms move in anti clock wise direction in the northern hemisphere and clock wise in the southern hemisphere. This is due to the movement of earth, and other forces like cyclostrophic force and geostrophic force.
