Having a c - section with epidural

I have two boys, I is 2.5 years old and the other is just 2 months old. I had planned to have natural births for both but I wanted it to be pain free so that I would be able to enjoy the moment. For my first delivery I went in to the hospital when I was 6cm dialated and contractions 5 mins apart. So you can imagine the pain was pretty intense already. I immediately asked for an epidural. Unfortunately I sharted bleeding and my placenta was lifting off the wall already. So I was adviced to have a c-section. As the epidural was already in place I decided to go ahead and be awake for the whole procedure. It turned out to be a horrible experience. It felt like I was a drawer and someone was rummaging through it to find something and couldn't find it. It was 45 mins of pure agony. As it turned out to be so traumatic, I decided then that I would never want to do that again. So when I went into deliver my second son in Oct, I asked for an epidural again. Just as I was 8cm, my baby's heart rate suddenly dropped and the doctor suspected that the cord was around his neck. So then, deejavous. I was being rolled into the operating theater again for the same procedure...Since I had gone through it before I wasn't as traumatised this time round and could still joke with the doctor about being rolled in a third time! Has anyone of you been through a similar experience?

Wow, that is quite an experience. I am 19 weeks pregnant with my first child so I am always interested in hearing others' experiences with their childrens' births. Thank you for sharing yours. Did you still feel pain even with your epidural?

Nope, I felt no pain at all but could feel all the pulling and tugging. Congratulations on your pregnancy, I wish you a wonderful experience and a safe delivery. Do keep us updated.

This sounds an awful thing for you to experience Etharon, but at lest the second time around you could joke with the Doctor. My only child was born kind of naturally, although he was induced at 36 weeks because of complications. In those days I don't think there were epidurals around, so we went with the flow, so to speak. My waters were broken at 8.00 a.m. and a drip into my arm and waited. My husband was there for part of the day, went home to milk our cows, then he came back after that. The Doctor saw me several times during the day, at about 8.00 p.m. they slowed the drip because I had had no labour pains at all. At 11.30 p.m. Dr told my husband to go home to bed and come in after the morning milking. Husband and Doctor both left the hospital around 11.45 p.m. sure that nothing was going to happen. At 1.05 a.m. I called the nursing staff because labour pains, Doctor arrived at 1.19 a.m. and son born at 1.20 a.m. This shows that every pregnancy and birth are different and babies will do what they want to. Why? Simply because they haven't read the manual which tells them what to do to be born and how to do it. LOL I am pleased that you have 2 healthy children and I am quite sure that everything you went through was worth it just to have them. Good luck to all of you, and don't assume that because of what happened with these 2 births that the same would happen again. If you have any doubts then you should talk to your Doctor about the situation, so at least next time you will be prepared. If that is at all possible where birth is concerned that is. :)

My two children were born naturally, not even an epidural. Back in the "olden days", I'm not even sure they gave epidurals. I actually never heard of them until my grandchildren were born. But I never had to have a c-section. I could almost feel your pain from your description of what you went through. My niece had to have a c-section...same reason as your second child. Her recovery was a lot longer than mine, but she had no choice either. I guess we mothers just do what has to be done to ensure our children are safely born. I'm glad you could joke with the doctor. Sometimes that does help.

I was fortunate and didn't have that happened. It was painful but I had the epideral for both. I'm sorry you had to have such a bad experience.

My first son was born by forceps because his heart rate was dropping and he was distressed. My twins were emergency C-section because one of them had his legs all over the place. Every pregnancy is different and unique. And even the best laid plans may not come true. Main thing is you have healthy babies and that you're healthy too.

jeezus, i couldnt imagine that. my girlfriend had our son last year, and she had an epideral and a i guess 'regular' birth. that was scary enough for me, i couldnt handle a c section, i wouldnt even want to think about how she would do! she had headaches for a few weeks after as well due to the epideral i guess. I had the baby for 2 weeks+ and she could barely get out of bed! sort of similar? how long did it take you to recuperate from the c sections? id be scared, thats slicing your stomach lining apart. My stomach is bad enough! lol
