C.R.A.Z.Y. was released in 2005. Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, it tells the story of a family in Quebec from the 60s until the 80s, and their relationships, along with their journey towards tolerance and acceptance.
I saw this film in french with english subtitles. It not only presents an intimate portrait of a family dealing with difficult hardships (father struggling to deal with one son's homosexuality, whole family dealing with another's drug abuse) but also encapsulates each time period magnificently. Music, decor and costumes are used to great effect to convincingly recreate the 60s, 70s and 80s. Both popular anglophone and francophone artists are featured, such as Patsy Cline, Charles Aznavour, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, etc. Each choice of song adds to the rythym and emotional tone of the scene for which it has been chosen.
Emotional, yet not melodramatic, this colourful, lively and very true-to-life portrayal of family life and strife is a must-see!
