What dogs do you consider to be the best breeds to have around a family.
I have been told that a chihuahua will help a child that has asthma. My mom always had a chihuahua when I was growing up and I never had any problems with my asthma until after i moved out and didn't have one around all the time. Do you believe this is true about chihuahuas and asthma?
WOuld you have a dog in the house with your kids?

When I was growing up we always had a collie. They are gentle and they are protectors. Us kids were walking up the hill to the mail box one day when My uncle came driving down the hill. The road was a dirt road with lots of large pot holes in it. our collie got in the middle of the road and would not move till all us kids were out of the road then he moved to the side.
We also had a collie when we were raising our kids. The kids were out in the meadow one day, picking wild strawberries when suddenly our collie started barking and would not let the kids go any where. They started crying and screaming for me. I went out to check on them and there was a copperhead snake (they are posion) about 6 feet ahead of them

I absolutely LOVE the American Pit Bull Terrier. In my opinion, they are the most awesome dog to have...especially around children. I have 4 of them right now. They are all in the house. I don't have kids yet, but when I do, I'm not going to change anything about my dogs.

From my experience (my family have had dogs, but not me) a golden retriever or labrador has a nice temperament and is an intelligent breed. I agree with dangermouse. They are good with kids too.
