i have cell phones for both of my boys, i know when we were growing up there was no need for this, but i think in this day that sometimes it is a good idea for the kids to have them, i dont think that they should be using them in school and things like that, but to have them when they are out just for safety measures to be able to get ahold of someone when needed or to know where they are.

I know from reading all the comments everyone says they should be used for safety measures but who is it that can tell a child what to do when no one is around? What about beepers?

I mean ..there are even walkie talkies for that fact..that allow children to communicate..I think it's fine if your children are reasonable and mature enough..but think of the children that are abducted..the connections that can be made..just as the cell phone can be used for good it could equally turn against you ...I am only saying be very aware of who your child has contact with through the phone..My young niece never told me she was messaging boys or other people like my brothers ex wife..you dont here the phone ring and yes..prepaids allow you to text too:(

I do not have any children to give a cellphone too but I think it is alright to do so as long as there is some kind of restriction to how many calls they can make or who they can call so that you don't end up with a very large phone bill. They should have one in case of an emergency but they shouldn't be using it to call all their friends unless they are able to pay themselves.

But my daughter loves to text every text she receives from her classmates. It's the only way they enjoy themselves.

Both of my boys have their own cells. I need them to have one so I can reach them at any given time. Plus, if work or practice runs late they can call me and I won't leave the house as early as I normally do to pick them up. How do you feel about kids having a cell phones?

I dont agree with children having cell phones..that is my opinion and I am sticking to it.. I saw my young niece chat away every ounce of prepaid minutes in one day .. It wasnt something people did in the past and children got along fine..

Well, my child is only 3yrs old...but no I don't believe we will let her have a cell phone even when she is a teen. Some children are more responsible then others so I really couldn't say either way, if my child shown us shes was responsible enough to have a cell phone, then yes it's possible.

i remember thte time which is not to long a go when even elders didnt have cell phones with them, only the land line use to rock.. today its different every child would ensure to carry his cell and give no pains to the books for school or collage... when our parent could do it we did it.. why cant our kids? they need to under stand the difference between luxury and neccessity.. but its parents responsibility to make that happen..
