Is the war on Christmas genuine, or cooked up?

I'm not religious, but I enjoy traditional Christmas carols and seeing nativity displays at this time of year. I don't personally know any people of different religions or atheists who are bothered by celebrations or decorations that tie Christmas to Christ's birth. I was talking to an atheist friend who lives in Florida, and she thinks the "War on Christmas" is an invented phenomenon. She thinks that people just assumed that because many non-Christians are in favour of separation of church and state, that they get offended by Christian images and songs, when it's simply untrue. I suppose all of us (Christians and non-Christians) get sick of the commercialism at this time of year, but are there any non-Christians living in a country where Christmas is widely celebrated who are offended by references to Jesus? What are your thoughts?

I remember when Happy Holidays wasn't a dirty word. Words and their meanings apparently evolve though. I'm in the camp though that thinks it is just some sort of political play, noise for the sake of noise. It's not like "Happy Holidays" is a jewish only sentiment. I'm an athiest, I can't stand bible thumping, but I could really care less if the person at the checkout lane says "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays". It is officially the government holiday of "Christmas" no matter what way you slice it. So they are saying have a happy one.

It's cooked up by people like Bill O'Reilly and all those other anchors on Fox. No one's out to get Christians, they're just trying to be inclusive of those who aren't. That's all there is to it - nothing more.
