Voice modification

How exactly do people modify professional singer's voices to make them sound better? I have been wondering this for a while now.

If you mean on the CD's then they use certain machines like synthesisers to modify the voices. If you mean in person, I'm sure they get certain medicatons, strict resting techiniques, and lengthy training to strengthen those muscles.
