Have you been to Oahu, (The Big Island) in Hawaii

I had a great time being in Oahu in the 80s. A great place where in one island, a tourist could experience the great place of the volcano islands named Hawaii. Been there? Tell us how you like being in Oahu.

I was there in 2003. I think it's a great area. The weather is wonderful. When I went, it would rain, like a mist rain, in the morning and then it would stop. That was just great. I would wake up and think, great it's raining. But I'd check back later and the rain went away. I went to diamond head, but it is a long hike. I enjoyed the view. But I wish there was a tour about the history of it from a native.

You reminded me again of Diamond Head, actually a great volcano hollow with great vistas. Had my heart pumping because of the climb but once you reach the top, it was well worth the long climb. Too bad, when I went up there I did not bring my camera. All I had was a small pocket camera. But the memory of that experience is with me all the time.

OOops! On the otherhand, according to my friends in Hawaii, that Diamond Head is actually a crater created by an ancient meteorite that crashed on the island! Can anyone verify this for me please.

I live on Oahu right now. I have been here for a little over 3 years. My husband is active duty Army and we are stationed on the island. I have to admit when we first got here I hated it. It was hard to be so far from home and have it cost so much to get back there. The more I got out and did stuff the more the place grew on me. Now Im sure I will cry when it comes time for us to leave! I love it here! Of course there are some things I would change but over all its not bad :)

You bet! Leaving the place after only a few days stay, made me lonesome so quickly. I adore the place, the culture, the easy life, the beaches, the place, but not the living standards. Hawaii in general is quite expensive to live-in. My friends who moved from the mainland found it hard to adjust coming from the suburbs of cities in the US mainland. But the place I must say becons to all who have been there once. One wants to experience the thrill of driving slowly on city roads on weekends, and lively beaches almost daily.

Oh yes, I lived in Honolulu, Oahu for 3 months in 1975. We had an apartment on 11th floor right on Ala Molana Boulevard. It was quiet a sight, from the balcony we could see the vast open sea and the horizon, we could see Diamond Head in the distant, down below we could see the beach and the people, so many people... I enjoyed driving around the island with my family, we made the trip to the other side of the island and back in one day. Our oldest son was only 7 and he loved to go to the beach everyday after school. Our youngest son was only 8 months old and we had to be careful with the sun. We only lived there for 3 months and we moved back to the main land since my husband could not find the job there back then. What a wonderful time we had and we went back to Oahu many more times since then.

I wish I could visit Oahu again. I enjoyed my stay there, and made a sidetrip to Pearl Harbour also. Going to the war museum made my eyes glisten, remembering those who perished on that infamous date when it was bombed by the Japanese. It was creepy touring the "Sharkfish", a famous submarine who has sunked more ships than any other submarine in that war. I imagined how hard and difficult it was to be a submariner, living in closed, hot, humid, cramped and stinking interiors of a submarine. But I also admired those submariners on their strength of willpower, stamina, dedication and most of all courage / bravery when they were at sea in a war that killed hundreds of thousands of people. God please save their souls!

I am from Honolulu. My house is behind Diamond Head. Did you go to Kahala Mall? My house is about a block away from there. Now, I'm living in Japan, but I miss Hawai'i so, so, so much. Next year, I'm finally moving back! It's been too long! My favorite part about living in Hawai'i is that no matter where you are, you aren't very far from a beach. I used to go to the beach at the end of my road a lot. It's not the most beautiful beach, but there aren't too many people, and I could run there in about 10 minutes. Also, the people in Hawai'i are the best! Or, as we say, NO KA OI! People are more relaxed, and like to just have a good time back home. When I lived on the mainland, I noticed that people were a little more uptight, and tended not to know their neighbors as well. Maybe it's just where I lived... I only went to the volcano on the Big Island once, back in 4th grade. All I remember is walking across the Kilauea caldera, and seeing the black sand beach. I seem to remember that I had a good time, though. About Diamond Head--it wasn't hit by a meteorite. I think your friends were just trying to pull a fast one one you. It is a caldera. When the magma pocket below the volcano emptied out, there was a giant underground hole beneath the volcano. The top of the volcano fell down into the hole, creating the shape you see now.

Hi Habuteru, Even your nickname is Japanese sounding. Yes I went to Kahala Mall and I also went to the Liberty Center and the International Marketplace. I stayed for 4 days in the Diamond Hotel. My former office is based in Honolulu, - Architects Hawaii Ltd. ================================================================== From your story here, you really miss the islands. My trip there for 9 days was so short because I wanted to learn more about the islands. You are right that the Hawaiians couldnt ask for anything more. They have the beaches, the sands, the lovely weather, the space and nature all around them, plus a relaxed way of life as if no one ever had to work but just go to the beaches and party !!! wow man! even at night, early dusk, almost everybody, specially the teenagers are gearing for a long night out on the streets. ======================================================================== How I wish I could go back there for a longer stay, with my suitcases of cameras. I am hobby photographer too. I will take the same route I drove on the 4 corners of the island where there are 4 seasons all at the same time. I think you know what I mean - it was quite an experience. ======================================================================== BTW, I lived in Tokyo for a year to work for DMJM, in Kanagawa Ken Prefecture. So I also know quite a lot of the Japanese culture and way of life, plus the living standards. How could you stay in such a cramped place. Japan is really short of land. Compared to Hawaii, Tokyo is like a matchbox. ================================================================== P.S. Ah, now there you go, my friend really pulled a fast one on me! He's from Waikiki. I always remember folks saying it is a caldera because of the shape and leveled ground. That place is huge!! Looks like a possible landing site for a space ship. I really had a weird feeling being on that caldera's edge.
