The wide usage of cell phones in todays world makes me wonder if they are an addiction or a necessity?
A cell phone has soooo many uses that I don’t even know where to start from but like it was when cells started coming in to use.. they used to be for emergencies but now I think calling up your boy/girlfriend also counts as an emergency… or rather MORE fatal than one.
In my case I know I need it sooo much all the time that from a necessity it has (to an extent) become an addiction..though there is VERY thin line and I really cannot define it. Can you ? So, friends tell me what is YOUR mobile phone for you ---- An addiction or a necessity ?

CELL PHONES HAVE BECOME AN ADDICTION WHEREAS IT SHOULD ONLY BE A NECESSITY.

of corse we cant deny the necessity of cellfones in todays world...we have to use it almost 100 times per day...so as we use it in tht frequency we r eventually "addicted" to it...

Excellent topic!
I think that the cell phone is a lot like other inventions throughout history...
for example, before electricity was invented, people were perfectly comfortable using candles for light. Now, of course, when we are without electricity we scramble for flashlights, mostly forgetting about when relying only on candles (and sunlight) was considered normal.
For me personally, I was perfectly fine before I had a cell phone (although a lot of my peers and everyone else around me had cell phones). Now, it is hard to imagine not having one, yet I still usually only use my phone for necessary communication (as opposed to always talking on the phone like some people are).
HOWEVER, I think some people get too obsessed with their cell phones. I mean, if someone is sitting in class or a meeting or in church, that phone (except in certain circumstances) should be OFF or SILENT!!
So basically, it is a good idea to have a cell phone for emergencies and mobile communication, but sometimes, people forget that the people who are right there in front of you are perfectly good for talking to as well...

For me, cellphone is necessity, because I use it for very important purposes especially communicating with my friends and loveones, it also depends on the person on how does he/she uses a cellphone, if he uses it just for fun, its an addiction.

For me cellphones are necessity, I have my cellphone through out the day waiting or texting, calling very important matter with regards to work or some financial opportunity. Also for emergency use. It is subject to the person who are mindful enough how to value the real use of this technology. But nowadays young minds are very skeptical using this kind of technology, It may be an addiction causing to improper use of it.

To me it is a necessity and Ive always thought like that. And the reason I think like that is because I hate the phone, so I think it is a good thing for me.

From my point of view, cell phones are a necessity. I need to be in constant touch with my children as they are gone to college. I believe that this is in close relation with you personality.

I agree. Cell phones are a necessity. It's our way of connecting with family and friends when we're not home. After having been a cell phone users for so many years, I can't imagine life without it anymore.
But we shouldn't let it rule our lives. Like, there were times when I couldn't use my cell phone, like when I would run out of batt. But then there's always a pay phone nearby. Of course you couldn't do much with a pay phone (like no texting, etc.) but that's good enough for when you have no cell phone. Which is usually for just a few hours (before you can get yours charged) to a few days (when it's busted).

You are so right; there is a very, very fine line between necessity and addiction when it comes to the cell phone. Calls that were once considered to be non-emergent are now very important since we have access to the phone 24/7. The important vs. non-important issues are hard to categorize, that's for sure. I get panicky when I don't have my phone with me, as I'm sure a lot of people do. I do, however, try to be polite about my cell phone use and turn the ringer to vibrate only in public. I also try not to talk while standing in line in a store or certainly not in a restaurant, as I know this bothers a lot of people.

Cell phones are useful, but I cannot help but wonder what is so important to so many people that they cannot wait to get home to call someone. I think there is a lot of innane useless chatter going on. It is a kind of mind pollution. Also, I think we are giving up a lot of our thinking and relaxing time by being so available all day long. We all need some down time.

I first took it as it becomes by necessity, but as the time passed by, as by busniss grows, it becomes an addiction as it becomes very indispensible thing for me. Now, i cannot live without it, as it is very necessary to keep in touch with everyone.
