MONTROSE — The Daily Press is looking for your pictures. We’ll take photos you’ve taken from various events, happenings in the community, your travels, animals or just people on the street for our new “Our Community” page. To submit: 1. Identify the people in the photo, left to right. First names and last. 2. Identify the event, and include a remark or two about what was going on in the photo. Include the date, too. More timely events have a better shot of getting published. 3. Send the photos electronically to: editor@montrosepress.com. Our only rules: No political photos. No business type photos or photos of someone trying to sell something. Candidate races MONTROSE — There will be a lot drawing to determine candidate positioning for three races on the November ballot. The candidate races involved are County Commissioner-District 3, County Clerk & Recorder and Sheriff. All interested persons are welcome to attend. The drawing will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19 in the Montrose County Courthouse, room 103. Writers' conference MONTROSE — The Western Slope Authors' Guild will host the annual Black Canyon Writers' Conference on Oct. 6 and 7. The event kicks off with a reception from 8 to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6 at Amelia's Restaurant in Montrose. Six published authors will present workshops on Saturday, Oct. 7. Help support Voices for Children MONTROSE — Voices for Children, a non-profit agency providing volunteer advocates for abused children, is hosting the 'Tis the Season Craft Show' on Oct. 27 and 28 at the National Guard Armory in Montrose. Booth prices are $40 and $50, less a $5 discount for those who provide their own tables. Space is limited, first come, first served. Call 249-0337 for more information and an entry form. Proceeds from all booth sales help support the work of Voices for Children. Emergency farm loans available MONTROSE — Producers in Delta, Gunnison and Montrose Counties could be eligible for emergency loans based on damages and losses caused by drought that occurred from Jan. 1, 2006 and continuing. The low interest loans are available to operators of family size farms/ranches who are unable to obtain credit elsewhere. Junior shooters safety program MONTROSE — Montrose Rod & Gun Club's junior shooters small bore rifle safety program registration is open to boys and girls, ages 10 to 16. The first class session runs October through December, 7 to 9 p.m., every Thursday evening, starting Oct. 5. Class size is limited to 20 students. Program is taught by NRA certified instructors on safe gun handling and shooting skills. Parents must sign-up students. For more information, call Jim at 249-9107 after 6 p.m. Photo judges needed MONTROSE — Community members, with an interest in photography, are invited to help judge the finalists in a photo contest sponsored by The Colorado Yurt Company, featuring images of yurts, tipis and tents. Photos will be displayed from Thursday, Sept. 21 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the company located on 28 West South 4th St. in Montrose. Magic Circle auditions MONTROSE — Magic Circle Players will hold auditions for the play, "Proof," from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17 and Monday, Sept. 18 at the theater. NARFE meeting DELTA — The Uncompahgre Chapter of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE) will meet at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18 at the Fireside Restaurant in Delta. Connor to address county issues MONTROSE — Bob Connor, candidate for Montrose County Commissioner, District 2, will be available to discuss concerns, issues with county residents starting Wednesday, Sept. 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the west courthouse lawn and continuing on the following dates: Sept. 27; Oct. 4, 11, 18, 25; Nov.1. Archaeology society to meet MONTROSE — An illustrated look at the Fremont culture will be presented at the Wednesday Sept. 20 monthly meeting of the Chipeta Chapter of the Colorado Archaeological Society. The free program is open to the public and begins at 7 p.m. in the Montrose United Methodist Church. Glade Hadden, area archaeologist for the Bureau of Land Management's Uncompahgre Field Office, will be the speaker. Take a hike MONTROSE — The Montrose 500 Mile Walkers have planned the following activities for September: Thursdays, 8:30 a.m.: Walk from bridge in Baldridge Park (no leader) as an option for those not participating in other Thursday hikes. Wednesday, Sept. 20: Little Cimarron East. Leave from Flairmont parking lot at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26: Upper Crag Crest Trail. Leave from city parking lot at N. 2nd & Cascade at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 28: Galloping Goose Hike. 'Savor the San Juans' fund-raiser RIDGWAY — The second annual gala fund-raiser, "Savor the San Juans," will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22 in the Kiva, at the Chipeta Sun Lodge and Spa in Ridgway. The event will feature wine tasting, chef sampling, live music and a live and silent auction. Forty (40) hours of volunteer training must be completed to become a resource center volunteer in any capacity. In addition to the need for crisis-line volunteers, the organization is looking for volunteer assistance with clerical duties, children's groups and community event projects.
