Dysmenorrhoea or painful menstruation is common complaint amongst adolescent girls. Primary dysmenorrhoea starts on the first day of menstruation and lasts for 12-24 hours. It usually starts shortly after menarche and regresses with age. The pain is felt in the lower abdomen, back and legs. It may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting and headache. The pain is severe enough in 5-10% of cases to make the girl miss school or college. Painkillers are effective in 70% of the cases if given right at the beginning and continued at 4-6 hourly intervals according to need. Girls who need contraception or those who do not respond to painkillers can be put on oral contraceptives, if the pain is debilitating enough to restrict activities.
