Illegal Aliens: Problem or Not?

The discussion of illegal aliens entering the United States has been quite a controversial subject in the news lately. In my opinion when you choose not to follow laws and rules you have to pay the consequences. As far as I'm concerned this matter should not even be up for discussion. When an illegal alien requires medical attention, has an automobile accident or commits an additional crime, (other than residing in the US illegally)US tax payers are forced to absorb those costs. We are not given a choice as to whether or not we want to contribute. Let's face it we all know that if the government really does not want for you to enter a certain domain, they make it virtually IMPOSSIBLE. For example, there are serious consequences for treaspassing or trying to enter the infamous Area 51. Do you think that the influx of illegal aliens into the US is a big problem?

I think men screw up the world since he said ... "this is mine!" I think every person should had the rigth to enter in any country without to worring abt being or not legal. This is about the people... now theres bad people and good people. So i dont think that is a rigth law to choose who can be legal or illegal! Bad people in jail, Good people working, thats simple. When an illegal alien has an accident i am sure he doesnt live from air. He probably worked under worse circumstancies than all of the "legal people". So why not a reward for the bad times he/she passed being illegal? I thing it will allways be a big problem since they are all illegal. So the thing the countries should do its to cut the crap of being legal or illegal... we are all humans and we all work for a better world.

Don't forget that you where all illegals at sometime in your families future...
Unless you're a native american, your family came over and butched the local people and stole their land.
That's just how things work... everything cycles, now other people are coming and they want a peice of the good life, it's up to all of us to learn how to share... or risk being run out.

Hey mtb, did you read that the Seminole Tribe in Florida just bought the Hard Rock Cafes and Casinos for a huge amount of money? I think most indian tribes in the US have casinos where they take a lot of money from many Americans, as well as people from other countries. By the way, my family came to this country LEGALLY in the early 1900s (not back in earlier centuries) and not illegally. They worked hard and paid taxes all their lives. That's all I'm asking today. Come here legally, work and pay your share of the taxes. It's the law here now and should be enforced.

Well, that originally the Indians owned much of the land in the west - e.g.: Colorado, etc - that the Americas had forced them out of several years ago. The problem is only a reciprocal affect of that old scenario. However, that is neither here or there now. Today there are distinct Laws that must be regarded by each and everyone regardless of country of origin.
There are immigration Laws, and law regarding taxes. It’s unfair that the economy as upheld by honest workers should be made to bear the brunt of illegal immigration, etc...

Have you ever been to Mexico? Have you ever seen the living conditions? I have, I lived there over a year the first time and 6 months the next. I agree that, yes, all immigrants should come here legally but the way the system is set up it is VERY DIFFICULT to get a Visa or a passport of any kind. It took my husband over 2 years to get his "greencard". We had 2 children before he got it.
They should make it a little easier to get over here, check records if possible, something. People are dying trying to come here, they just want to be able to provide for their families, why is that SO WRONG? Wouldn't YOU do anything to make sure YOUR family had something to eat? They don't have foodstamps or government checks or any type of assistance over there. The people over there are on their own.

I'm not saying that there should be open borders. Not at all! What I was saying was.........the US government should make it somehow easier to obtain a passport/ visa/ greencard whatever you want to call it. Don't you think 2 years is a bit long to wait?
Do background checks, whatever it takes, fine no problem (and they really should do them) but do it a bit quicker! The paperwork is enormous and alot of it is repetitive!
Put them on a watch or something, once the Hispanics get here legally, make them come in to the immigration office every 3 months, 6 months for the first year or two, see how they are doing finacially, not burdening the government, no crimes against them or whatever, something geez! Just make it quicker and easier.

Finally someone with the guts to post the discussion about my pet peeve. Good for you for speaking out. I think the illegal alien problem in the US is horrendous and out of control. George W. may want to invite all Hispanics into our country, but he's not down here in the trenches losing jobs to them, dealing with them on an everyday basis, dealing with crimes they commit, etc.
We moved from our hometown just because of the illegal alien problem. We were the model community in our state and became so overwhelmed in dealing with all the problems that many long-time residents moved away. The crime rate sky-rocketed. I had a Hispanic boy tell me one day, "You have too much violent crime in this city." Of course I had to tell him that we hadn't had any problem before all of his people had started arriving. The police force is unable to control things, because it is too small.
Hispanics are masters at not paying any taxes. They buy the cheapest house they can find and then about 40 of them live there. The neighborhood where the house is soon is overrun with cars parked up and down the streets irregardless of no parking signs. They don't have licenses, their kids don't take Driver's Ed., and they don't carry insurance. If you get hit by one of them, too bad. My daughter had her Blazer totalled one evening by a Hispanic's tire which flew off of his truck in traffic. He gave the police an insurance card, but when that turned out to be expired, he had disappeared into the Hispanic community, and the police couldn't find him.
The schools are overflowing there. As students, most of the kids are pretty lazy and absent a lot. Tons of them are placed into expensive special needs classes just because of poor attendance and lack of work ethic. We had some teens that came and enrolled every year, then stayed a few days or weeks and dropped out again causing major paperwork.
Many of them don't bother to learn to speak English. Therefore, when employers want to hire someone, they only consider the few people who are fluent in both English and Spanish. All the fast food, etc. jobs that teens used to do are gone to Hispanics, many of whom are illegals. I know one family where the parents speak no English and they've put 3 children through the public schools and been in the town for 15 years, but they still are illegal.
You can't get a doctor's appointment there any more. The post office is so crowded with Hispanics sending all their earnings back to Mexico that it's impossible to mail a package.
This is a bad situation and continues to worsen. Why don't these people, who self-proclaimed don't want to be Americans, stay in Mexico and work to improve their own country? And why do we continue to let them take our jobs, live on our welfare, take all of our money, and send it back to Mexico without making any contributions here?

"The post office is so crowded with Hispanics sending all their earnings back to Mexico that it's impossible to mail a package"
Would it change anything if the so called "Hispanics" here were american?
Would it change anything if they were born there?
Would it change anything if they speak perfect english just like you or also being natives?
Would it change anything if they worked and payed their taxes, like everyone else?
Or this is just a discrimination over on hispanic ppl?
I mean wake up ppl! We are talking about ppl here! Hispanics or not Hispanics, Blacks or either blue or green... Would it change anything? They take our jobs ??? I cant believe this lolol. Probably the job was there and no one took it! Or either they are working in lower wages and pour conditions (because of american, europeans companys that prefer to pay less to the employees, and also the gov. that doesnt set their minds over the legal illegal matters).
Everyone is free to go anywhere else to live or to just pass by. We are all humans. Let me know more about your oppinion...

I think that if they are here illegally they should be sent home. You hear countless stories about an illegal immigrant killing a cop because he doesn't have a driver's license to show when he is pulled over. I think our government should allow more people to come in legally. I'm sick of hearing people complaining about illegal immigrants taking their jobs. Let's be real people, we don't want to pick our own citrus or mow our own lawns. Another thing that ticks me off is that they drive around with their Mexico flags talking about Vivo Mexico. Vivo Mexico? If it's so great, then why are you breaking the law to be over here? Go home!

Those "killed a cop because he was an illegal immigrant" stories are nothing but rumors. That happens once and is an international incident--understandably so--but most illegal immigrants aren't doing anything you or I aren't doing anyway.

Actually I have seen at least three that were legit news stories - so they aren't all rumors! I watch the news regularly. And as for most of them aren't doing anything wrong - yes they are! They are in this country illegally! I have no problem with immigrants but go through the legal channels! They give nothing back to our community! THey don't buy anything here unless they have to. They are not giving anything back to us, but as someone mentioned before if they go to the hospital it's our taxes that cover it. I understand that Mexico is an impoverished country. I have been there. I love the culture and the people. But they will not let us over there illegally so why should we let them? Go through the proper channels.

The Without Wings was trying to convey is that, whether or not that was an isolated incident; the situation of illegal aliens goes beyond just economical. It’s now become a social issue backed by high levels of desperation giving rise to desperate acts of crime/violence. A "visa-bearing" or otherwise "legal" alien would have no immediate (if any at all) need to resort to such desperate acts.
This forum has highlighted all the problems, both emotionally and objectively, of illegal immigration. However, what is the solution we propose. These people are making it harder for even the innocent and well-meaning in terms of travel and immigration world-wide.

I appreciate the discussion but I feel like many of the responses don't deal with the bigger problem here. First of all, illegal aliens are in the U.S. and here to stay, like it or not. Second, they are a huge part of the economy here. All that stuff about their taking American jobs is nonsense. Americans don't want the jobs that illegal aliens take--like working at dairy farms, washing dishes, and cleaning houses for ridiculously low wages. Clearly, it would be a generalization to say that NO Americans--not a single one--wants the jobs taken by illegal immigrants but I would feel pretty comfortable saying that the majority of Americans do not.
As for having to absorb additional costs, I think that's an inflated theory with lots of hot air. One commenter said that Hispanic illegal immigrants are really good at avoiding taxation. That's a ridiculously racist thing to say, by the way. I've worked with illegal immigrants before. Many do pay taxes in the hopes that one day the country will look at their record of payment to the country and legalize them. And for those who don't pay--I mean, would you? While there are certainly illegal immigrants who commit crimes and go to the hospital, there's sure of a lot who never ever access the public welfare system, never call the police or get admitted to the hospital for fear that they get deported and mistreated. It's a vicious circle! So-cakked illegals are forced to hide in the shadows and that exacerabates the problem, especially if it's a violence or health problem only to have it explode and when it does, everyone makes a big deal about how they are taking advantage of the system.
Also, everyone is so eager to just kick them out back to their own countries. It's probably worthwhile to think about what that means. Even before considering the wretched poverty that force these individuals in the first place (yes they are forced. No one leaves their home because it's nice and liveable there), consider how your own lives will be impacted when you no longer have a subclass of people willing to work for hideously low wages and for insanely long hours.
Now thinking about WHY these people are here. People aren't here because their homes are so WONDERFUL they can't BEAR to be there. It's because they live in abject poverty. People from Mexico who have educations, live in large cities, and are middle class don't come to this country to work. They have resources. The people who risk their lives to bear discrimination from Americans come from villages that cannot sustain life anymore. And the response that well maybe they should do something about that--or let Mexico deal with it is not responsive to the increasingly global economy that is going on now. Like it or not, the United States CREATED the vast disparity in wealth between nations. People may point fingers at me and call me whatever names they like but this country is rich because we act in selfish ways. And these selfish ways do not need to include physical stealing. As a global superpower, we've always had the capacity to bear down on other countries and make them do things we want them to do. Many times we choose not to. We could have encouraged Mexico to develop its rural areas (since they're right next to us, hello illegal immigration could have been seen and avoided from decades away), or attempt to deal with its own class struggles. And no, it's not good for everyone to "do their own thing" and for us to leave others alone. While I don't agree with starting a war, political pressure goes a hell of a long way and I believe we have a moral responsibility--as the richest country in the world--to encourage good in others or at least to support policies that will make it easier for us to live.

There's a big, huge reason people should come here legally and not illegally. Whereas if they come here legally, you get a background check on them. But if illegals come, you don't know who is coming, a criminal or worse, the next big terrorist who's going to bomb something.

Twenty-five years ago the dishwashers were afterschool kids. The construction workers, electricians, painters and plummers were manuel labor hotties. Housekeepers spoke at least SOME English. Regardless of why they are here, they are ILLEGAL! There are Americans in Arkansas living in the same "wretched poverty." That's no excuse to break the law. That's a reason to make different choices for your life. If every American or legal citizen owned business would refuse to hire illegals, maybe we could make a dent in this atrocity. Starbucks and In and Out Burger don't pile illegals behind their counters. It's all about standards. They choose to profit a little less in order to keep standards high. There will always be the "haves" and the "have nots." That's just the way of the world.

Yes, I think that illegals are HUGE problem. I think they are such a problem that if you don't have a valid state ID that you should not be able to receive health insurance or any benefits from the state or federal government. I don't think we should pay a red cent for illegals to get any kind of care. The people that illegal employ these folks and pay under the table should be severly fined.

I think Americans need to stand up and fight for what is theirs, even if it means going to war with Mexico. I think Congress needs to get their butt in action and start laying down some laws that need to be strictly enforced. I am the most caring person out there and I am always helping those in need out, but I don't want my tax dollars wasted on some person who doesn't even belong in the US. I think immigration lawyers would be HAPPY because they would be making money hand over fist with these people trying to stay in the country. I think the first step is finding a way to keep them out, the next step is kicking those out who don't belong here.

While this may be a superb idea....one wonders as to its feasibility. For instance, Americans tend to be their very own source of contradiction. So, Illegal immigrants start falling sick, making babies by zillions, jobless, hungry, becoming homeless vagabonds….what’s then going to happen. No social security, no State aid. Ok! Ssay we send them back, as are, to their homes to be cared for.
Now what, immigration Lawyers (in their owm financials ineterstes) will start to rant and rave, crying out "human rights! Human Rights!"...etc...etc.
You see, at the end of the day, Americas are a lenient, and conscientious bunch. Slow to act! That’s not necessarily a bad thing, unless push comes to shove. They wouldn’t pull all plugs, even when the need to do so evident. To pull all the plugs would mean that Americans are likely to be labeled: semi-Hitler,....lacking sense of humanity. This is a very delicate issue. And the last thing we want is for America to become like France.
So what then do we propose?

Funny how you never herd of re-called food due to diseases till recently when these Mexican's are taking over California. Oh and Cuban's in Florida now. Castro is too sick to rule like he did before. Cuban's come here on boat thanks to Clinton to make a better life for themselves and use "comunism" as an excuse to enter the USA. How stupid is that? I came to this country legally and got seperated from my parents at 16 years old and waited my turn to become fully legal here...No one cared about me, but it happened to some boy down in Miami Florida and WOW IT'S a HUGE DEAL NOW! A legal person wouldn't be able to make that kind of money in the time this girl did. Anyways these ILLEGAL CRIMINALS are using the excuse. "Oh I robbed or Killed that person because I was just tryin to make a better life". That's the worst excuse I have ever herd. Pathetic. Besides.... picking on ur words .... u said : How can a baby killer get her green card within weeks of murdering her baby? So if she has her green card .. then she is a legal not illegal ... I do believe that has to do more with who´s criminal or who isnt. So in this case ...ppl that commit crimes their places should be in jail. Legal, illegal or either natives comit crimes. So that has to do with the people, if they are good or bad ppl.(Thats the police job to determinate that)I am european and i see alot of people coming to my country some working in really bad conditions,if they were legal probably they would apply for better jobs and pay the taxes like everyone else does, some are graduated and are just trying to get a better life. In country´s where the minimum salary is low and also theres no jobs and no state support, what do u expect them to do? Legal/illegal/native...It doesnt matter...dont u agree? Ok I got a problem here...I read most of the comments on here and why is it that when someone talks about "illegals" coming into the USA they are always talking about people from Mexico.....The mexicans are not the only one's crossing the border, remember there are cubans crossing the lake to get to Florida, canadians cross too...So why is it ONLY Mexico that people got a problem with.
Yes I am mexican, I was born in the United States, so no I am not illegal..There is nothing wrong for people to come over to the USA to make a better life for their family, who cares if they are illegal. There are NOT that many jobs in Mexico so that is why my people come over to find a job and yes send back money to help their family out.
We all do everything the same way, eat, drink, bleed red blood, cry...so why can't we just all live without people hating no matter where the person is from or if they are legal or illegal...We are all the same!Let me ask this....if there were no illegals...then who would have cleaned up Louisiana and those states when the huricane passed thru??? No one was there but illegals were cleaning up, yes working minimum wage we were the only one's there cleaning the town up while the others were no where to be found.
Who do you see at restaurants cleaning dishes, bussing, working factory work, gardening, and all the other jobs that people don't really want...MEXICANS!!

Yes I do think it is a problem, but you can't really compare it to Area 51. The amount of money it takes to secure the small area around Area 51 is nothing compared to what it would take to control the border of Mexico that tight, let alone the border with Canada. We just don't have the funds available that it would take to control such a large amount of area, especially while trying to fund an overseas war. However, yes, illegal immigration is a problem....but it is not one that will soon be fixed.

I think it is a HUGE problem. If they were just here to work, it would be different. They will lead you to believe that they are just here to work, that we NEED them. Truth be told, they bring their whole families here, extended relatives included. They apply for and receive welfare and food stamps. Their kids attend our schools, dragging down the classes because they cannot understand english well, so spanish classes are organized for them. Some of them are criminals escaping the mexican government. They drive without insurance. They work for cash, not paying ANY taxes. So you can see, we PAY and PAY and PAY for these people who are sneaking into our country. THEN.......... they take to the streets and organize massive strikes........ because they feel they are being discriminated against.. IF YOU ARE HERE ILLEGALLY, YOU HAVE NO RIGHTS. Go back to Mexico if you don't like it here. Apply to be her legally and you may have some rights. If they continue to infiltrate the US, the US will BE Mexico before long.

Very well said. That can also be said about the Cubans. They have taken over Miami (my home town). One area is even called "Little Havana". Many of the older ones that have been here 25-45 years or longer still refuse to learn or speak English...yet they have been getting good jobs over the years because they are "bi-lingual". Sure they are, they can say "no speak English", so they are bi-lingual. In the early 1980s after the Mariel boatlift, there were so many Cubans living in the Miami area (sometimes 10-20 or even more per household) that the government paid for them to leave the area and relocate somewhere else. They were given transportation costs, rental payments and social security payments for 3 years. This was reported in the local newspapers, and it made me see red! Could we ever get that from our own government? Nope! Yet we're the ones who paid the taxes and they got the social security benefits without ever working in the US for one day, plus rental payments and transportation costs to a new city. If a Cuban gets one foot on land here, they can stay. If a Haitian gets here, they are sent back home. They're all trying to escape from countries that have horrible governments and want a better way of life, yet only the Cubans can stay. As Al Sharpton says on a TV commercial running in South Florida, "Is it the 'wet foot/dry foot' policy or the 'white foot/black foot' policy. I'm white, and I don't agree with the policy at all. I think everyone should come here legally, work and pay taxes...just like we do (at least all us honest citizens...there are always exceptions). Okay, off my soapbox now!

This is one of the biggest problems facing our country. I agree that if you choose not to follow the laws, you should pay the consequences. If we go to Mexico and break the law, do you think they are NOT going to put us in jail? Not likely. I have no problem with them wanting to be here, just do it the right way. It costs taxpayers a lot of money because of this. Also, they come over and can be hired for pennies of what an employer would have to pay a citizen. Don't we have enough problems with our own economy and unemployment, people living in poverty? There has to be a line drawn, and I don't agree with the governments ideas of solving this problem. If they have been here so many years...let's just let them become citizens and go on about their lives. How long have they been working here and not paying taxes? I pay taxes every year to a government who I am not happy with right now, but I still pay it. I think that there should be some penalties imposed on them. After all, wouldn't that be considered tax fraud if one of us citizens did that? Move here, fine. But follow the same rules and laws that we Americans have to follow, you aren't special.
